Howdy... Well, I don't actually own a 240SX, but my brother does. This the reason I'm posting. It being the holidays and all, I wonder if someone might be able to tell me the diameter of the stock shift rod on a JDM 180SX transmission? My brother has asked for a new shift knob for Christmas and it comes in 2 sizes: 3/8" or 7/16". I'm running out of time to order, so I'm hoping someone knows.

Anyone? Please!

I don't think it matters, the aftermarket non Nissan OEM shift knobs attach with screws anyway.

The stock threading is 20mm or 25mm I think.

Thanks for the reply. The knob he wants is not one of the usual popular aftermarket knobs... at least for imports. It's actually a vintage style Hurst knob (with the 5 speed pattern) that screws on like the original. I think he digs it from his days when he was into muscle cars... I think his '67 GTO had the same knob.

Anyway, if the original is 20 or 25mm, I think the 7/16" is approx. 20mm and should be fine.

Thanks a ton. Happy holidays!

If you mean the thread/pitch of the stock ****er...where the OEM knob screws on...it's not 20mm.

IIRC, it's 12 X 1.5.

Hurst knobs will not come in that size.

BTW, 1 inch = 25.4mm

7/16" = 11.11mm

(For future reference...)

Thanks orion. I was thinking that 20mm seemed awfully big for a shifter rod, but I didn't do the math. So, either way he is gonna have to mod the shifter knob, but at least the 7/16" would be closer.

If you wanted to avoid damaging your Hurst shifter (T-handle, right? Man I love those) get a short steel rod (hex rod will make it easier to install/remove). Have one end machined with threads for the 240 rod, the other with threads for the Hurst knob. Easy, cheap and will probably no more than an inch or so to the overall height. Good stuff.
