I am new to all of this. But this looks like a great forum. I have a 1992 240SX Red Convertible. Two more years of use by my second teenager and I will actually be able to start fixing it up! In the mean time, I have a fluid leak from the left side of the convertible top. My local repair man could not find the part and neither could the local dealer. Can someone point me in the right direction? Do I need just a piston, or a whole assembly and hose? I am not very mechanically inclined and would probably have someone do th ework for me. Thanks for any help

Hi bes!

Welcome to the forum. Glad to have you aboard.

If you get a chance, please register your 'vert w/ vin # in the registry that we are building. It's one of the red sticky threads atop the forum.

As for your leak. It's difficult to say what you need to replace if we don't know which part is leaking. I would guess that a hose or hose connection might be the weakest link in that system, and most likely to be the cause of your problem. However, without some inspection, it's hard to know for sure.

Click on this link and then select the convertible supplement. Go ahead and download it and save it to your computer. It will be invaluable to you. There is a complete chapter on the hydrolic system with pictures and step by step instructions. http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/240sx/

Let us know if you have further questions and we'll help walk you through them. Hopefully we can avoid you having to spend much money.

Welcome aboard, Ralph!

Let's start with a basic rundown of the system, because you may be forced to know what you're getting into...

You have a pump and 2 hydraulic lines. One line goes to each ram, on each side of the top.

If you can tell us more about where you're seeing fluid, that'll help a ton. The lines are super-easy to replace, and they can be bought at any hardware store... it's a pertty primitive system, but it's a good one.

If the ram is leaking, that's a bigger issue, but we can cross that bridge when we come to it. Let's find the leak first.

Welcome aboard. This is a great community to solve all your problems. Like AZHitman said, you need to find the leak first. I had a crack in one of my lines and all I did was go to home depot (or any plumbing supply store) and get a 1/4" compression tube to 1/4" compression tube fitting and install it where my cracked line was.
