Hi folks - just traded a ratted out Suzuki Bandit for the blue meanie here and wanted to introduce myself. I am entering a strange new world - this is my first Japanese vehicle ever, other than brief ownership of an Isuzu 4x4 pickup. I've owned a bunch of BMW's, a representative from each of the other major German manufacturers, a collection of Jeeps in the past, and my current stable is a '96 M3, '80 Cherokee Chief, and '86 Porsche 944 Turbo. The Datsun is taking over the daily driver spot while I redo the top end on the Porsche (19psi into a stock head gasket and I feel like I'm driving a ticking time bomb).

Currently the 720 is having some difficulty getting over 3000rpm under load, so this weekend comes the usual check of vacuum lines and figuring out why the PO needed 3 fuel filters. I may just give in and do the Weber conversion and see if I can sneak it through a CA smog test. I'm sure I will have a lot of questions in the future, so I will just say a big thank you now

Sweet looking truck. With enough patience and money, mine will look as good.

Welcome.

Thanks all for the warm welcome! I am very happy with my $600 truck. Put a few new vacuum lines on it and took it by my smog dude (Phil at Smog Man in San Jose is the only person who is allowed to touch any of my cars). It not only passed, but it had lower emissions than any other car I own! Still runs like crap, but it is registered and on the road. Today I spent some time with paint and wax and polishing compound. Nothing fancy, but it cleaned up pretty nicely. Still to come:* Weber 32/36 Carb (the kit is on sale at AutohausAZ.com for $300!)* Herculiner in the bed* New stereo with 2x6.5" speakers (nothing fancy)* 30x9.5-15 BFG All Terrains* Hella 330 driving lights

and that will be it. I need one stock vehicle in my stable...

Quick before and after - painted front below the bumper and wheels, waxed and polished it.

Ready for Ben's idiot question of the day?

It sure seems like I'm missing a flapper/door/butterfly/whatever you want to call it. You tell me.

EDIT: It's called a choke plate, and I don't have one. Wonder where it went and where I can get a new one...

Ben, that's what mine looks like. Now that I have all the vacuum lines in place or capped, it runs sweet.

Ben, just looked at your pictures on a different computer. Yeah, you are missing the butterfly choke. Kinda need that.

Yah, I'm using the craptacular-ness of the carb on this to give myself an excuse to go Weber. As soon as possible.

Today got the bed primed and prepared for Herculiner... next I get to sand it a bit and spray on another coat of primer, then on with the black goop. Also did some work on the interior and got it looking more presentable. Need some new floor mats. Sadly, I also think I need some work on my hubs. When I drop it into 4wd I get that lovely clicking sound when I turn the steering wheel. I would love to keep the auto hubs, but perhaps some Warns will land on the truck instead.

Love the fender badges. Welcome you'll be right at home. . You have the choke plate. It only goes on one side and is operated by your electric choke.

but there's no choke plate on either side... no huge problem - Weber will be otw in a week or two and it runs well enough to get me down the road.

Look again. That's where the plate should be, but someone took it off. All that is left is the cross shaft.

Flinterman, that's what I thought too at first. But looking at it on a better monitor, I could see that what I thought was the choke plate was really a shadow.

I saw that too. I would take the other one out before it gets ingested.

I checked that pretty closely, I was worried about the same thing. I really wish it was payday already - that carb is coming soon!

Noticed the missing screw when I used My desktop not my laptop. Remove the other screw before sh*t happens. If you do not have problems when cold don't bother with it.

It actually runs best when it's been warmed up for about a minute but has yet to reach full operating temperature. Two days until I order my Weber.....

Should I have issues, I will just pull the Hitachi off the shelf - not too much of a hassle to swap carbs every two years!

Howdy & welcome. Check with Pierce Manifolds on you Weber. They are in CA and might have a better price and I beleive that Autohaus az is selling the EMPI China look a likes. Talk to Mary at PM she has helped me in the past and they have parts in stock.

Does your truck have power windows & door locks? Some interior pictures would be great.

Thank you for sharing.

I saw the blue license plate and yo mention of CA smog and assumed you lived in California. Good reason for members to fill out their location.

I t looks like a great truck for the money. After seeing the missing choke plate I would replace the carburetor also.

There is a Ratsun member named Radio that lives in Canada, not sure where in Canada you are, but he might be able to help you locate a stock carburetor.

Charlie - I am in San Jose. Igota is apparently in Canada.

Regarding the carbs, Autohaus is selling the Redline kit, and it looks to be the same price as the folks you linked after you add adapters and filters, etc.
