Ok guys, I have found a "running" 1982 280z for $600. The outside has been well maintained, the only problem is it's missing the covers that go right behind the doors. The interior is beat to hell. The only thing even intact is te driver's seat. It has the inline 6 non-turbo, but it has a turbo hood on it. I have had a 94 240sx so I know alot can be done to these nissans to make em haul and to make them look awesome. I just had a few questions that I'm sure ya'll could answer but I have no idea.1. What engines will swap directly into the chassis?2. Is there a turbo version of the inline 6?3. Where can I find such engines?4. How hard is it to put the interior back together? (I have done alot of work to my 240 so I do have some experience)5. Is the stock transmission any good, or will i need to replace it if I build up the engine?I think that's it for right now. Ya'll just let me know and I will try to get this car by tomorrow to lok at it. Later -Chris

1. the best easiest direct swap on the motor would eb the L28ET which is the turbo version of the motor you already have, with boost and fuel intake and exhaust you can get them to about 220 whp, add an intercooler and bigger injectors and you'll get 275-290 whp (keep in mind we're talking about a 2900 lb car) upsize the turboa nd add aftermarket injection and 400 whp is about the limit on the stock pistons, the L6 engines are the only true bold in, but with a read drive platform a little welding a fabbing can put most any engine in

2. yes

3.it was available on 81-83 280Zx turbo models (check the junkyards)

4. interior is a snap if you have opposable digits and can turn a screwdriver and a ratchet you can put the interior back together

5.the N/A trans can't handle constant drag racing, if your not a hardcore drag racer and keep the power in the 300whp range the stock trans will hold fine, if not the turbo cars came with a borgwarner T5 which is good to around 400 whp (rumor has it the KA24DE trans is also good for 400whp which is what I am running (not a bolt in))

LOOK FOR RUST thats the number one killer in these cars! if it's not plastic, rubber or glass look fro rust! pay close attention to the rear lower quarters, the rocker panels, the lower rear front finders, the rear floor pans which is where the rear suspension cross member bolts to the chassis

Awesome. so far so good.Should I re-ring the L28ET when I find it, or are they good about seals and stuff? I have heard a rumor that there is a L28ET down the street from where I am actually buyin the car. The problem is they want an arm and a leg for it. Can I take the manifold and turbo and all that and put it on the N/A L28E that is in there now, or would i be better off gettin the complete thing? By the way I don;t know if the L28ET even runs.Would it require a complete rebuild?OOH suspension? anything i need to know there? How availabel are parts for this car? I have looked all night and not found a whole lot.

you can swap the manifolds and turbos but i wouldnt recomend it...... the compression on the non turbo l28 is too high to run high boost... your better off getting the the whole turbo engine and ECU.. your also going to need to get the wire harness from the turbo 280 as well.. and the AFM...

parts for our car is getting harder and harder to get.. you can go to http://www.carparts.com theyve got a pretty good selection on hard to find parts for our cars..

actualy turboing the N/A is common practice, they are only 9:1 or there abouts but you'll need an intercooler, I've heard of people doing it with the stock N/A electronics, your best off getting the whole L28ET cause all the little stuff will kill you, you'll need the alrger turbo injectors, the turbo oil pan or a drain port added to yours, you'll need the adapter at the oil pressure sender for the oil supply line for the turbo ets. it's just easier to get a whoe turbo motor, I've bought 2 complete wrecked turbo cars for $350 check with your local junkyards you might find a decne tdonor burried in the back of the yard, and I would try a compression check bofore swapping in the motor, they tend to be good for 300,000 if not completely neglected so unless your have low compression I wouldn't crack the motor open
