Hi all,New guy here. Just had a question. I have read more times then I care to count about the infamous 5th gear pop out that some SR20 powered machines have. Anyhow, I just purchased a 1993.5 Infiniti G20. It's a odd one because its a half year. I understand these had a 1993 motor (hi-port, whatever that is) and basically everything else was from a 1994. I know it has the newer style ABS module, dual airbags, no more power seat belts, and new R-134a coolant. My question is, does my car had the better transmission? I have read that the 94's and up the chances of pop out are lower, if not elimenated because of a re-designed 5th gear synchro.

I ask because I was cruising the highway today and the I put the car in 5th and was looking at it (The road was empty) and when I let the clutch out I saw the shifter jump a little. No pop out, but a jump. It seemed when I hit the gas the shifter jumped forward (Towards the engine) and when I let off the gas the shifted kind of kicked back a little. (towards me). Nothing popped out and I was only doin about 2800 RPM and goin about 65 or so. I am just wondering if this bad boy is going to need a rebuild in the near future (the shifter moving on me really scares me) or is that just the way these cars are? I will be honest and say I am new to Nissan's.

Any response is helpfull!Thank you!

John

You chances of getting 5th gear pop are less than the previous years. The shifter moving around is quite normal as you are putting a load on the drivetrain. Don't sweat it too much, those transmissions are a dime a dozen and you have the option to upgrade to a new transmission if that time ever came, even one with LSD, since you don't have it now.
