Hey guys, please refrain from the flame fest but I have two questions. :gapteeth:
First off - 1989 240SX Hatchback -
Anyways, I am in the processes of tearing it apart right now to strip, repaint, and refurbish the entire car.

I am currently trying to do some research on motors. I have it narrowed down to the S13 and S14 SR20DET. So there is my first question. I understand the S14 "Notch top" is more linear and makes more power out of the box. But from the readings i've done it seems the S13 has more potential if you start putting money internally. The main purpose of this car is a street and weekend track car. I have a daily Integra and my S2000. Which in y'all's opinion would be the best choice? I can't see much other than the S14 having smaller ports and VVL? Thanks.

Secondly, I have found several sources of motors (the old motor source threads I find are all very outdated and some shops like heavy throttle have closed).

I have shopped Enjuku a few times before and some one said they sold motors but i don't see them?
Please give input if anyone knows a good source thanks!

And obligatory pics or it didn't happen. Here is my s2000:

Looks like a nice rust free chassis you have there! There's tons of importers out there for engines, best bet is to see who has a good rep and hopefully there's someone local to you. As far as the s13 vs s14, my opinion is to just go for the 13 engine. A little cheaper, more parts support, and I believe that you disable the variable valve timing when you go to big cams anyway.

Yeah so far the only bad spot i've found its the battery tray, and its pretty bad. But thus far nothing else. I kept seeing the variable valve junk goes away if you do cams, but then i see people saying they have what ever HKS cams and JWT cams and still have their VVT, so theres a bit of misinformation floating around.

I saw a couple motors and such up on their site, but I don't see dropping 4-5k on an SR when I could get the entire clip and then some for like 3ish... granted its built but I think AV Engineering an hour away from me can build it cheaper if I find a good motor.

Tomorrow hopefully the engine comes out (for good!). I work on it when I can. I have to take the subframe to my dads shop so I can sandblast it and repaint it, then I get to do the underside of the car if I can figure out the time, and the engine bay. Once that's done comes the energy suspension bushing set. At that point i'll be researching hubs, if I need 5 lug, brakes, wheels, and tires. Then comes motor... gotta make sure i don't have a good motor and a jacked a** car to put it in ya know? :nono:

I've gotten many motors from Venus-Auto.com out of sacramento, CA. Their website sucks, it's best to e-mail or call Ron (the owner). If you're on the east coast it might be expensive to ship, but their prices are good and customer service top notch. As for which motor, I'd just go with the S13 SR. It's cheaper and if you're going to upgrade the turbo anyways, no reason to pay the extra money. I do recommend a black top though, so you get a little bit newer motor.

I've dealt with JGY a few times. Good company, but I'm guessing prices on SRs have gone up in recent years. I don't think I've priced one out since 2007, and I remember paying around 1800/motor back then.

But stick with an S13 motor if you plan on modifying it. You won't see much difference between an S14 and an S13 once you dump money into them, so save yourself some money going that route. Plus, the S13 head flows better than the S14/S15 head.

Not really an update but I was drawing out the items i need to buy and I was wondering... do 240SX need their stock clusters? IE: if i put an SR20 in and decided to do a gauge setup like... broadfield's, how does that effect the ECU?

It doesn't affect the ECU at all.
