I am a signature away from buying an 08 G35XS and this oil consumption thing has me a bit worried. Does anyone know if this issue includes the 08 cars? For whatever reason the manual transmission cars seem to the the targets but it sounds like any one of these cars can have this issue. I am trading in a '98 A4 2.8 with 90,000 miles on it and it doesn't burn a drop of oil between changes at 3000 miles. That is what I would expect from a well made car and anything else sounds like nonsence. Please let me know if any of you have any details on the '08's. This car is a no brainer with it's looks and performance but not the oil consuption.

Welcome to the forum. My 08 has 2250 miles and the dipstick level is still on the dot by the H, (it has not used any at all). I believe the oil problems are related to a few of the 6MT "rev up" engines (the 298HP ones) not the VQ35HR engine.

In short, I don't think oil consumption with the VQ35HR is an issue.Buy the car and break it in according to the manual (<1200 miles means <4000 RPM, a very hard thing to do), and enjoy life.

The Infinity tech bulletin No. ITB08-002 does refer to V35 and CV35 motors. It was issued in Jan of '08 and refers to '05 to '07 cars. I believe we are safe in an '08 but it is still spooky. This kind of thing just shouldn't happen to any of these cars given this motor has been given so much respect over the years. Thanks for your comments. Anybody else out there?

Welcome to Nicoclub!

I have an '07 Sedan with the AT and absolutely LOVE it! By far the best car I've ever owned. I was originally concerned about the oil burning issue, but have not experienced it one bit. I've changed the oil EXACTLY per the owners manual and I ROMP on the car everyday... my oil level at the end of a change cycle is the same as when I first change the oil. These new engines are so tightly calibrated that you shouldn't see any further issues with oil consumption. Just make sure you break the new baby in properly to make sure everything seats well. This should not be an issue to you as these bugs were pretty much wiped out with the VQ35 Engine.

Good luck with the new purchase and be sure to post pics when you get the new beauty!

Have you "Built" your car yet??? what options/packages/color schemes are you going with? I love a new G!

Keep us posted and WELCOME!Dave

I have a 07 Sedan with the HR motor. I bought it used with 14k miles on it. Started using Mobil 1 and had oil consumption issues. It used almost a quart every 3,000 miles for the 1st 2 oil changes. Then I started letting the dealership do the oil changes and the oil consumption is gone. I think it was either two things. #1 the car may have had conventional oil previously since it was a lease and the change to Mobil 1 caused it to have a little wear in period during which it used oil. Or #2 the dealership is charging me $5 for an oil additive this additive may prevent oil consumption?

I think I noticed that everyone who was using oil was also doing their own oil changes?

The 07 coupe had a different engine than the 07 sedan. The 08 coupe has a different engine than the 08 sedan too. I think you are reading about the <07 coupe, or the <06 sedans with 6MTs. The 07 and 08 G35 sedans have the VQ35HR and I don't believe they have any oil issues at all. Search this site for Gs and oil consumption and you'll see info and tech references.

Yes it is built and sitting on the lot with a sold sticker on it. All I have to do is pull the trigger. It is an '08 G35XS. Graphite with black interior. Nav and sports package, 18 inch wheels with body colored side moldings (hate door dings) and clear bra. Love the interior with the aluminum trim, paddle shifter and seats etc. Also love the ipod connection. I am trading in an Audi and tried out their ipod interface. It intercepts the CD changer and gives you 6 playlists. I have 7000 songs on this thing and I am never going to memorize what is where. The Infinity has a screen that looks just like the ipod. That and the fact that it goes like stink, looks good and has great road manors makes it a remarkable car. I come from years of German ownership so that is a bit of a problem but it goes away with the $10,000 price difference to a BMW 335ix.

That's Awesome! Log off your computer now and get down to the dealership to sign those papers! You won't regret it! Sounds like a beautiful set up you're getting. I'm excited for you as you'll love the new car... be sure to keep us posted and read our threads about breaking in the engine before you go stomping the new bad boy... there are different schools of thought on how to break one in, but I'd go with the tried and true manufacturers suggestion in your manual.

WOO HOO!

Pull the trigger!! And remember, once you're an owner you have to use the correct spelling of Infiniti

Welcome to NICO

Don't worry about the oil consumption issue. As others have written, it may no longer be an issue in the 08's? They changed the manufacture of the rings. My G does use some oil and you can do a search and read my extensive posts on that topic. I love my MT 6 speed and you should be aware prior to purchase that the 6 MT outperform the G35X by a huge margin. You should test drive both before you sign. Just my $.02Calm down, take a deep breath, and don't show any emotion to the dealer towards any one vehicle. Tell em you're going to test drive a BMW one more time and don't hesitate to walk a few times. Keep test driving a 6 MT and the G35X & tell em you are trying to decide. Return just before closing a few times and keep talking.Keep testing your Ipod, bluetooth, Nav, ask how everything works, etc. I had them remove the shroud underneath the vehicle to show me the oil filter. I didn't purchase at that dealer either but it sure was fun. Buying a G can be fun & driving auto sales people crazy is part of the fun.

A G35 with 10G in the bank is a much better deal than a 335i. A G35 with 10G in enhancements is several orders of magnitude better than a 335i.Win/win with Infiniti.

The only mod I have is chrome license plate frames, and my engine is so smooth and quiet that I can't tell it is running without looking at the tach.

The VQ engine has been on Wards list of 10 best engines since that list began. In my opinion, it is the best 6 in the world, bar none.

Telcoman is right... I just got a little giddy with the idea of new car shopping. Maintain your composure and play that dealer like a fiddle! I toyed with my salesman for 12 weeks before I would lock down on an offer. Everytime he kept saying "you really need to get out of that old car, I'd say "well... you need a car sale much more than I need a new car"... that would really honk him off! I have awesome credit, a thick savings account and a nice trade-in so I was definately in the right position to deal... Don't let your emotions get the better of you, remember that Infiniti will make more cars just like the one you want and the car lot will still be there tomorrow... if the times not perfect now, then don't fire just yet. Shopping during a blizzard in Ohio is probably a pretty good time to buy a car though...

Right on Arizona

I purchased mine on New Years Eve 12/31/05 and my previous 4 vehicles in the month of December. My 1988 Mazda 929 5 sp manual was purchased on Christmas Eve. Best month of the year to purchase a new carI used to work with a guy who constantly visited car dealers and we used to discuss how we drove them crazy.

Thanks to all of you for the support. I will be doing this in the next week or so. Kind of a long story but I am putting a motor in an old Porsche and it got out of control so the funding is a bit tight. Still only a signature away.
