Hi everyone. Just got a 2008 G35x, traded up from my 2001 Maxima 20AE. A couple of questions:1) I have read that the G auto transmission is seamless, but mine is anything but, it hesitates, lousy shift points, not at all smooth. My Max was much better. Any suggestions?

and

2) Lousy gas mileage so far (with 3k miles), not more that 17 and mostly highway,

Any thoughts??

Congrats on the new ride. Now for you're issues.

1. The trans has what is called adaptive learning. It takes some time, but it will learn your driving style. If you drive easy the car learns that, if you let someone else drive it that is aggressive, it will learn that. Then when you get back in, it will shift firmer and harder then what you like. I have seen this on many VW's that the owner lets thier teenage son drive it for the weekend.

2. The gas mileage will improve as the engine breaks in. In most cases it will take up to 20k miles before you will see the "EPA" mileage that is listed on the sticker.

Hope this helps. And enjoy!

3K on the car? Or you've had it for 3K?'

G35 Auto transmission is very smooth for me. Now, the ECU and TCU are self learning so the shift points should adapt to your style of driving. This shouldn't really change the smoothness of it though.

If you have only 3K miles on the car at this point and haven't changed the oil that would be the first thing to do. Check the transmission fluid level as well. It shouldn't be low for a new car but still...

As far as the low MPG.... well, you bought an X. You are going to have lower mileage because of the all wheel drive and heavier transmission. I'm assuming you don't have very many miles because it sounds like the car is still breaking in. 17-18 MPG is the average with city/hwy driving for X's. If its all highway/mostly highway it will get better once its broken in all the way.

I'd recommend Royal Purple gear oil for your differentials as well as engine oil...I wouldnt change to synthetic til you have 7500 miles though.

What the boys said. It learns your habit.

Gasmilage well nothing wrong with the car believe me. This is my second G35X. Here is how it goes for me. I can get 13 mpg or usuall 16-17 sometimes more it all depends on my right foot. My wife got 21 mpg over a week pure city driving.

And how adaoptive the ECUand TCU is. After I've got my car back from my wife it was slow. Did not accelerate a way it did before. I had to drive it hard for a few dayu before it felt the same.

I know you compare to your old maxima. I can copare to the new maxima with that stupid trany. I had it for 2 days and it had the same gasmilage with the same driving style.

If I wanted to save some gas I would not buy the G.

Just my .02

my 05 g35x was sluggish when i test drove it in auto mode... but once i drove it in maual mode i was sold! then once the transmission and ecm learned my habits its been a blast in auto mode. The transmission with now shift at or above 5k rpms with about 50% applied to the pedal in 1st and 2nd gear and at red line with full throttle in the first three gears. (but im in manual mode about 60% of the time)

i now have ~27k on my 05x and the lowest i have gotten is 16mpg with city driving and playing with car. When im on the highway staying between 75-85 mph im in the mid 20s in mpg (i reset my trip counter with every fill up)

not the best mpg in the city but respectable on the highway.

I have a 2008 XS with technology, so should be a good reference.

My auto seems to shift well. I have close to 7 k on it at the moment and get an average of about 21 mph in mixed driving. Mostly city driving gets me about 19 mph, freeway I gotten about 24 in moderate to light traffic. Press it a little bit and it will drop dramatically.

If worried I would take it back to the dealer to look at, much better than waiting and then having a small issue turn into a much larger problem.

Definitely time for your first oil change if you haven't got that done yet.

Did you check the transmission dipstick?

Because of the lower gas prices I have been driving my car much harder lately. Now, even in AUTO mode, it will shift at around 4000-4500 RPMs in 1st, 2nd, & 3rd gears since I've been driving it so hard lately. This makes it feel less "smooth" at times if I'm in traffic as I'm not trying to accelerate as fast.

How did you do on the engine break in process?

Get that oil changed (if you haven't) and then get back to us on how it runs.
