My rubber fuel hoses going in and out of the filter were cracking and fraying pretty badly, dripping and on the verge of crumbling. I went to the hardware store and bought 200psi clear braided vinyl hose. It isnt a problem, is it?

Installation was a royal pain, but its working fine so far.

i dont know about that.

fuel injection hose is cheap at a parts store.

i wouldnt trust that vinyl to fuel hose duty. if it gets dissolved, it will ruin your day. [unless a burning car is the highlight of your day]

If it doesn't specifically say it's OK with gas, then you could have a problem. Otherwise you're fine. Now for the king of the nitpicks. Your oil dipstick is in backwards. There should be a little arrow on it that points F for forward. Believe it or not, the owner's manual says it makes a difference!

Dissolving hose was my first concern. I made the guy who sold it to me call the supplier and verify... but who knows, maybe he was babbling to an answering machine to get rid of me.

I have no idea if that hose is designed to deal with the chemicals in gasoline! PSI isn't the only factor - heat resistance and resistance to gasoline are important too.

Hopefully you aren't getting melted vinyl in your injectors - not to mention the fire risk if it breaks! I recall someone a year or two ago that relocated a plastic fuel filter near the exhaust that caused an engine fire! Take someone else's car to an auto parts store - buy some fuel injector hose. It's probably not as good as the OEM hose, but it's better than what you've got!

if i were you i would not trust that hose for a second.

definately take a different car to get some FI hose.

i know it was a ***** to change, but you dont want to be the one to find out if gasoline melts the vinyl.

no one wants to see a thread with pictures of your burning Q...

I thought you were kidding.

Jesda, I had the master tech at my dealership view this thread. He said someone actually did the same thing with a 91 Q last year, and the car ended up being towed in after it burst into flames. The result: new engine without updated chain guides. In his opinion, if you're questioning it enough to create a thread on it, then you've just answered your own question.

AAAARRGGGGHHH ! I wouldn't even drive it. Run away.

Use only special fuel injection clamps only for that size too (5/16"), then check them in a week. If the hose goes on really tough, put a thin film of some kind of lube on, silicone is the best.

YES! very important.. normal clamps with the little holes in them (that the screw turns into, and thus tightens) will eventually cause leaks......

Welcome to the Dark side my friend. I think you will find it much cheaper on the dark side.

ANyway, do not use Vinyl hose for gas. It will get eaten away. Believe me, before I actually went and bought bulk hose for my Q45s fuel system, I did a little testing.

I bought about 6in of High Pressure Vinyl hose, High pressure Fuel injector hose, and a little bit of Garden Hose just for kicks.

I placed all the hoses in 93OC Gas, completely submerged. Let them stay that way for 2 days. I can tell you, three hoses went in, 1 hose came out "alive". The Fuel Injector fuel hose was the only one that was still in "perfect" condition when I took it out. Both of the others had noticably dissolved.

So, go to the Local AutoZone. Ask for "High Pressure Fuel Hose". It should be about $5.99 a ft. IIRC, you will need about 2 ft.

ANyway, can I count this as a conversion from OEM to the "cheap stuff"?

I think he learned his short lesson. "To burn or not to burn that is the question..."

Here's the irony... when I went to Advance for FI hose and new clamps, it was half the price of vinyl. Doh!Then right after I walked out of the store with new hose my FPCU died.

Oh crap... The Q is very ironic in that way. You are in the middle of repairing one thing and another is on the way out anyway.

I guess that is why you need a nice bank roll to keep up.

Wow Jes, that sucks. Try to see if you can use the FPCU from Wes's Crimson Q. While your at it, snag the upper links too. Your in need of links.

jesda is getting his jerry rigged FPCUs back in a couple days...

But yeah, you do need new links. Its bad when you hear them creaking just from people getting in and out of the car
