Hey, I just picked up a 01 Nissan Frontier Desert Runner with a V6, for use as a DD, parts hauler and possible rescue vehicle for my two Talons. I had a question regarding the truck, or more specifically about the engine.

Is the V6 engine in the Frontier an "interference engine"? The truck has almost 79K miles on it, and according to the manual it's not supposed to have the timing belt changed out until 105K miles or so. Quite a few more miles than the 60K mile interval recomended for the 4G63 motor in my Talon. I've got an extended warranty on the truck, but I'd like to be aware of any potential problems or issues before they become an urgent issue.

It's not as optioned out as much as I'd like, but other than that I've got no real complaints about the truck. Seems to be fairly sturdy, and comfortable. Rides well for a truck, and seems to have a decent amount of power. Hopefully it'll be able to pull my Talon back home if needed. This is the first vehicle I've bought that hasn't been a DSM/Mitsu product, so I was a bit nervous. So far it looks like a good choice. Thanks.

Hahahaha! That's awesome, I like you already. Welcome aboard.

Given the fact that you don't know the prior treatment of the truck, I'd say a premature belt change would be wise. I'll let those more experienced with that particular motor chime in, but my vote would be for an early swap.

Yes that engine is an interference engine. I work in a very busy nissan shop and have not yet seen a vehicle with the new 105k belt have any problems as far as the timing belt stretching or breaking we usually change them at 105k.Something you may want to check on that vehicle is coolant leaks. The most common places are, intake gaskets and the back corners of the cylinder heads.
