I think I may have figured out the problem, probably not though lol...

I think I need an internal voltage regulator, the alternator I picked up is external. Does this sound right?

all s130's (79-83) in the states used an internally regulated alternator, all earlier cars, the S30 chassis 280Z's used internal, as we've clarified you'rs is an S130 (79-83) and therefres hould have the 79's internally regulated alternator, did you get an alternator for a 77? if so there is your problem, go get one for an 79-83

Thats where I'm running into problems... The '79 doesnt even look like it would work by looking at the pictures. I'm going to run back up there in a couple minutes and check it out again. I'll report back shortly

all US market alternators 70-83 use the same case and can be bolted on using the same mounts, only the wiring changed

Just a quick question... You keep mentioning "in the states" or US market.... Being that this isnt from the states, would it be different?

Yes. There is the potential for many things to be different. Obviously, the right vs left hand drive. Then there's the 2.0L motor that the US never got. And who knows what else could potentially be different.

I realize that, those are pretty obvious. I'm talking about mainly the difference with the L20 and L28 that was available over here.

exactly, I can only attest to what I know about US model, there might well be variants in other market models, they could use a completely different alternator for all I know, but I would strongly suspect it's the same as they don't make their own alternators, and you got a 30 year old car that has had who knows what done to it over the years, I had a 78 that someone modified to accept a GM 3 wire alternator

and if you can't get it any other way there is a guy that makes modify's GM 1 wire alternators to bolt to the L6, although the upper ear isn't positioned ideally, you just leave the stock connetions off and run one wire to the battery for power and hook the ground wire to the chassis of the alternator

I can't think of the name right now nor can I seem to find it
