There is a gadget commonly sold for this purpose which uses a small 9 volt transistor radio battery to supply voltage to the electrical system, via the car's cigar lighter plug. Unfortunately, the Q45's lighter plug isn't connected to anything until the ignition switch is turned on - and turning the ignition switch on draws way too much current for the puny 9 volt battery to supply.
Bad idea.
I use a small 12 volt gell-cell (out of a computer UPS), connected to a short piece of 2-conductor zip cord, with large alligator clips soldered to the other end of both wires. I attach these wires to the battery cables before disconnecting and removing the battery, taking care not to allow them to unclip until after the cables are connected to the new battery.
I'm not particularly concerned about things going haywire without battery power, but rather the prospect of having to re-program the radio, memory seat positions, etc. afterwards.
