The Wartsila NSD (Sulzer) RTA96-C two-stroke diesel engine The most powerful and most efficient piston prime-mover in the world today. Bore of just under 3'2", stroke of just over 8'2". Available in 6 through 12 cylinder versions (all inline). Maximum continuous power of 89,640 HP is obtained at 100RPM with the 12 cylinder version. Maximum economy power of 53,244 HP is obtained at 90 RPM. The engine exceeded 100,000 horsepower during overspeed testing (all of 101.5 RPM!) while under test at Japan's Diesel Union works (who also built the first engines and from who these pictures are taken). Fuel consumption at maximum power is 0.278 lbs/HP/hour (BSFC). Fuel consumption at maximum economy is 0.260 lbs/HP/hour. The latter figure exceeds 50% thermal efficiency (i.e. more than 50% of the fuel going into the engine is converted to power). Compare with automotive and small aircraft spark-ignition engines with BSFCs in the 0.40-0.60 range and 25-30% thermal efficiency. Engine weight exceeds 2000 tons in the 12 cylinder version (the crankshaft alone exceeds 300 tons).

Note that, even at its most efficient power setting, the 12 cylinder version will consume nearly 1,660 gallons of heavy fuel oil an hour!

Someone posted that on my forum. It's pretty hardcore.

naw , probably a broom, simple green, mop and a long walk inside a deep dark hole/tunnel , dees im sure you could elaborate

as for what its in , ive seen those in large crude carrying ships and stuff , 2 miles down the road off base here there is a crankshaft that was longer than my late G20 , will go take a pic of it this weekend , but id think theyd just run big locomotive engines tied to generators and have electric motors to drive the props ...moust be somekinda weird arse ship

those look like studs for mains to bolt to , with some big arse nuts

almost 100,000 hp and the vehicle its in will probably never go faster than 35 mph ....would sink faster than it could swim if the ship ever came apart

also first time ive ever seen hollow con rod journals

it's an old trick used to lighten the crankshaft. an added benefit is that it makes the counterweights more effective (not applicable in this case). most of the aftermarket crankshaft companies do it.

kinda funny though...

trying to lighten a 300 ton crankshaft.

yah , there only turning 100 rpm , yet they are concerned with lowering the rotational mass ....weird ..didnt think of that ...wonder what the deal is there

good idea to hollow that out tho , heard of cams done thata way but never the journals

Do you guys know where I can get some 1mm oversize pistons for mine? I'm looking to for some extra power. Figure that's good for 20,000hp. lol, maybe I'll break into the 13's.

It needs some type "R" stickers that will add some serious power i'm sure.

Don't you use propane instead of nitrous oxide for diesel engines?
