Unless you are doing the porting/polishing yourself, with a few junk yard spare heads around, and you REALLY need the P&P because you think it'll help you with power (too small a gain for the work to be done for lots of money by professionals), I would not recommend it.

True. Mine's at 210000 miles and I'm in no real rush to rebuild or replace the motor. I just pay better attention to it than I think I normally would. LOL... I've gotten REALLY good at pulling codes from the ECU.

Save for a while. You have more options than you think. If your block and head are sound, you can rebuild the engine with higher-performance pieces to eek out some N/A gain or prep for boost. Or, if you want to keep it stockish, use OEM parts. From what I've found, a rebuild, if possible, can be a better option than remanu or used engines. However, if there is the slightest problem with the engine components, you should probably look at a full swap. Needless to say, this really shouldn't be a problem for you for at least another 50000 miles, IMHO.

Quick question... I've heard of porting the head for performance gains, and only on forced induction engines or BIG N/A engines. Is that what you're going for? Or is this an attempt to increase engine longevity?

I didn't know that P&P extended engine life. Actually, I don't think it does. Driving more carefully, shifting appropriately and not slamming on the gas at every stop light extends engine life. Changing your oil regularly and checking the ECU to stay ahead of mechanical issues extends engine life. Truly, I don't know how a P&P job will help your engine live longer.

Yep. Only proper maintenance and a redline every now and then (to keep carbon deposits at bay) can keep your engine healthy and make it live long.

Okay, well, no, your theory isn't so much wrong as it is misnamed. Port and polish is the term used to describe a procedure that maximizes the efficency of the intake and exhaust ports in the head. You don't "port and polish" your whole engine.

You can rebore the cylinders (not recommended), buy oversized pistons (not entirely necessary... limits space between piston and cylinder wall) and a host of other upgrades. I would suggest that you have at least a year before you have to perform any of this stuff, so you should take your time and save up for a quality rebuild or swap.

My $0.02.
