i built a new 2.4 ka engine with 40 over piston and rebuil crank did the valve re laped new eveything and the truck sounds like it would if the guides were bad, think i gat a bad tensioner than again it could br the moly based grease in the oil making it to thick not sure.the lower end sounds great and runs great the sound is killing me and i have install ones before with nop problem.

go back to basicsvacuum gauge will show you alot if you let itcompression test will also help do it both wet and dry and compare results also buy a cheap stethoscope to help pinpoint the noises (it may be a transfer noise from something unrelated)as per the grease for the most part all that was washed away in the first few minutes of running the engine most likely not a problemverify proper engine operation first
