Post

Hi, ppl from Nicoclub. My name is Oscar... but everybody calls me Herz or Herzeleid.
This is my first post-thread, and I need your help and advice.

Two months ago I bought a 1990 s13 with a KA24E engine that had a spun bearing. Yesterday I tore the engine apart and found that in fact it had a spun bearing. In the past, I´ve built honda engines (B series engines) and I used to have the crankshafts machined if they were scratched or something... and after machining them, I had no issues at all.

Now, to the point. This crankshaft is in the STD size, and I´m wondering if I could fix this crankshaft by machining it to .10 or .20. I´m not sure if you can tell by pictures, but the scratches are not too deep. Also, please take a look at the rod because to me, it looks pretty bad. It looks like the bearing melted on the rod... so disgusting.

I could buy another engine and it´s not too expensive... I can get it at the price of $200 bucks. But if I wanted to fix this engine, I would spend around $120 bucks.

If you need more pictures with more light or something, please let me know.
Thanks in advance.
Oscar

I've probably got the same issue with spun bearing/rod knock. Either way, I would machine it first since it would probably be cheapest. Also, I would say get a brand new crank before wasting time on another 20+ year old engine that might already have the same problem.

Machining might be as much as another engine with the way KA prices are. I'd vote for a DE swap if it was my car.

Hi guys, thanks for your input.
I just want to fix the car to move from home to work and vice versa. I don´t wanna be racing it.
I also wanna fix it ASAP. If I buy another engine, the junk yard will give me a 20 days warranty.

Perhaps I should buy another engine.

I would still machine/buy new. If you want it fixed asap that would be best IMO. Another engine is great for extra part and such but if there's something already wrong with the engine it would just be wasting even more time.

Good call. I´m gonna take it to the machine shop tomorrow. And I´m gonna overbuild it.
Thanks. :)
