I have been in this game a long time and know a lot of people that can tell you how to build a engine but do they really know. When my built engine took a craft from a bad oil pump I was a little mad but it gave me the chance to build a new engine. I decided to go with a engine building shop that has all the equipment you could dream of and the knowledge. I told them what I wanted and then they told me what I need for road racing. I wanted to sleeve the block but was told that the water passages are not as good in a sleeve block versus a open deck so we decided to go with the stock bore and leave the sleeves has thick as possible. Here are a few specs and pictures of the build.

I am not looking to break any hp records I am just trying to run a good 600rwhp numbers all the time. More pictures and updates to come.

Thanks for all the interest and support and here is the update on the intake manifold. With my old intake the torque was good in just ran out of air up top from the lack of volume, increase volume = horsepower so that's what I'm doing. I in trying to make it look like a professional welder made it but aluminum is so hard to make it look good but here's some pictures anyway.

Sleeving the block in that of itself doesn't affect the cooling passages. Bracing or closing the deck can affect , but when power levels get high enough, it becomes necessary. Open deck blocks have a tendency to have the cylinders shift under high pressure, which can cause problems with head gasket sealing.

I'm not sure at what power levels that becomes necessary at, but I would check with some people who are experienced with building a high HP VQ. Bear in mind, if any more power could be in order later on, now would be the best time to do such work, rather than to have to pull the motor apart again.

Mike:

What are you doing to this car? Is there anything on that car that is stock anymore? How much power is enough? I am thrilled and intrigued at what can be done with a VQ engine. I wish I had the money to do the stuff you are doing. Well done!

500 to 600 hp for 30 minutes is all I'm asking for and do it with no problems. That sounds easy right.

That is a lot to ask for the VQ engine. How much have you invested in this project so far?

In the bottom end + machining I have a round $5,600 it makes me sick to think about the total amount. By no means have I invested all this money without some return. By going to track days and meets I have been able to make connections in my field of work.

This is really interesting! You do inspire me. Judging from the way you write and your tenacity/focus, you are probably a very disciplined individual. Well done! So, are you planning to add a turbo with that plenum? And, where did you get the idea that you could build your own plenum and parts? I bet infiniti/Nissan would be happy to have you as one of their engineers.

Amazing how clean the internals of your engine is, given that you race the car. Do you use synthetic motor oil in your engine?
