"Tests for the new "H" licenses will include a low-speed friction test; a cycling test to measure shift durability; a plate friction test to run 150 hours instead of the current 100; a band friction test; an extended GM oxidation test to run 50 percent longer (to 450 hours); and a newly developed air entrainment test. A new slate of seal materials will also be used in seal compatibility testing."

450 hours x 45 mph = 20,250 miles ?????????????

"Now that the formulations of many ATFs have changed to using Group II base oils, we're seeing that the failure mode for these fluids is not due to oxidation, but because the friction system fails," Fewkes noted."

The friction system fails because the heat breaks down the glue holding the clutch material together and the circulating crap wears out the surfaces.................can you say inline extra filters needed.

The transmission usually has a filter coming out of the pan.but it is more like a screen.

In additon there are kits out there (not expensive either) where you can put an actual filter into your ATF line.

Since they are not inside the transmission but in the ATF lines outside of it, they are not too hard to change.

Fred...:)

An inline filter is just an oil filter with in and out tips, you cut the rubber heat exchanger hose and slip and clamp it in series with a line.

Even the 94Q with two filters gets the ATF dirty eventually. Without the added clutch material easier to see the minute changes in color of the ATF....................still needs changing every 30k because of heat degradation.

The 150 hour friction test REMARK scares me [assuming it is an accelerated test] one could use the 450 hour life as an example...............20k heavy traffic and 30k all highway............sure far from 100k fill for life???????????????

Follow the lines from the transmission to the filter passenger front black unit fed via lines from metal tee.

Should this be changed at time of transmission flush? Thanks. Wayne

Just like the engine or other systems: Maintenance is a function of how long you want the part to last.I use 5% of initial cost as a maintenance budget.......$2500 per year.

Or in the case of a replacement transmission $3,000 so $150 per year for this subsystem.........since flushes are $100-$130 you should be able to do all the transmission preventative maintainence on a 2 year schedule FROM DAY ONE BRAND NEW and not exceed $300 every 2 years.

Not doing extra things [above the minimal factory recommendations] during the warranty gives owners a false sense of what maintenance costs...[[they see the depreciation but ignore the need to spend]]..........just open a seperate maintenance account putting $200 per month and taking out what you need for everything [not for washes or detailing].

Dennis, thanks for the info on ATF fluid. I've leaned much this past month since I discovered NICO, and I've gotten the majority of my knowledge from your posts. It's a rare thing to be able to accept someone's advice as gospel, as opposed to some who want to seem knowledgeable so they "shoot from the hip" (referring to most messsage boards). So thanks again for all the great advice. You and others have saved me 1K since I bought my car last month.

My 94 factory service manual is still on backorder (books4cars) and they say could be for some time.

I also have a 94 Q and have been wondering the same thing about the factory "front" filter.

So..... in your opinion should owners replace the front factory trans filter? If so at what mileage typically? I'm betting you've disected an old one, haven't you ;)

I recently ordered an inline filter kit, so should I simply bypass the factory filter?

I also plan to add an aux trans cooler this spring, so I assume the factory "front" filter would be bypassed anyway?

In the Infiniti dealer svc records it lists "JOB: TSS Comments: service automatic trans. " What does this mean was done? Or is it just a generic term which could be a multitude of things? This was performed at 35k miles.

Here's a brief summary of my car:

Bought last month (94) with 127,000 miles, and looks better than most 2 year old cars. The PO was meticulous, he just didn't know he should do more than the factory minimum.

I've changed all fluids except coolant (will do this week when changing water pump)

All recomended factory service done by the PO, not that that's saying much. Trans fluid was changed/flushed/screen replaced by me last week, but surprisingly it wasn't that much darker than new. The pan was fairly clean, 1/8 ferrous material on the magnet, and filter screen looked clean except for a tan coloring of the screen. (I assume this is the clutch binder material ?)

BTW, here's a little feedback for all of you. I replaced my noisy fuel pump last week, and it cured the following problem:

Upon max acceleration the engines power would fluctuate up and down, but not to the point I'd call it hesitation, it just felt like I was slightly letting off the gas, and then pressing it down again.

Thanks,

Kevin
