Yeah, given that CAFE is such a big deal and, by fast car standards, the Corvette is a very high-volume affair, we can expect to see something else eventually. If Cadillac is going to completely forsake the V8 (likely), we can expect to see some twin-turbo V6 Corvettes in the future.
Besides, someone from GM was already quoted on autoblog stating that they think that the next Corvette will need to be a little smaller, much lighter, and maybe less powerful, but still maybe faster due to lighter weight, etc.
Not that I want it, I'll miss 8-banger vettes if they truly do disappear.
Smaller and lighter I agree with. Hence why I've owned 240's an FD, and an 86. However, you can still achieve greater fuel economy out of these small block V8's. GM has been experimenting with different fuel injection systems, as well as shutting down cylinders in other cars(like the GTO) and are still working on new designs.
I could see a smaller displacement V8 powering the next generations of corvette. Here's why I think you won't see a twin turbo v6 though.
Look at the GT-R, 3000GT, 300zx, Supra, etc. They all have worse fuel economy than the LT1/LS1/LS7. Even though these smaller engines make comparable power, you have to beat the piss out of them to get it, where as the V8 doesn't work half as hard. My supercharged Ls1 gave me 29mpg going to S13Teddy's Summer BBQ in L.A. 2 months ago driving 80-85. There's been FD's with LS1 swaps getting in the mid 30's.
It would be more likely, that the corvette will downsize to an FD's size, and get a smaller displacement V8(like a 5.0 or 5.3liter perhaps) and get mid 30's on the freeway and 20's around town.
Not to mention you still have to sell the Corvette, and the majority of buyers buy it for it's tradition, and it's V8. Going from pop-ups to fixed headlights caused quite a stir on the corvette community, that still has corvette owners divided. The Corvette department of GM isn't stupid enough to go rear engine, AWD, or 6 banger and turbos. It's not going to be as efficient.
