If you open up the system you are supposed to replace the reciever dryer.
From previous research I dont think you need to replace the condensor unless it is
leaking or is plugged up

Unless you have the proper equipment to service the air-conditioning system, it is best left to a qualified shop. They have the proper equipment to evacuate the system and know how much freon and oil are needed to recharge it after replacing the compressor. Besides, it is illegal to discharge freon into the atmosphere.

As per suggestion from 'nutria,' it is better to replace the receiver dryer as that component absorbs water vapor and could be saturated, especially if the AC lines have been open for a while.

Autozone rents machine that captures the freon as well as the vacuum guages.
You have to have that right balance of oil and refrigerant in your system to avoid
compressor damage and for the AC to properly coos. You could hook up the guages and see if your system has leaks and what the compressor is doing-no harm here as long as you hook it up correctly. I was able to get a good vacuum (no leakes) diagnoses. If your compressor is low on the high side and high on the low side it could be dead. However mine had these symptoms but the shop managed to keep it going for $100.
So basically I was partially successful using the AC tools.
