So I'm told I need a new clutch. Been doing a little research too

Since they cannot resurface the dual mass flywheel, I have to replace that too.

Now I'm hearing more and more about replacing the dual mass flywheel with a regular flywheel.

Has anyone done this/had experience with this? Any downsides?

So far, I've heard that they are noisy and it would be a huge pain if I was stuck in traffic every day. How bad is the noise?

It's quite a bit cheaper to put a regular flywheel in and apparently the regular is put into quite a few high performance cars with higher horsepower. Of course, I won't have 500+HP anytime soon.

I'm not really seeing a downside to this except that this car was made for the dual mass flywheel and designed to have a smoother ride and easier shifting.

Any thoughts?

I've replaced my clutch/flywheel with a lightweight, single mass flywheel and a stage 4 clutch from competition clutch.

First, the stage 4 clutch was a mistake. I was toying around with the idea of installing FI (supercharger) in my car...so I figured I'd have the clutch ready. Well I never did the install so now I have this PITA clutch to deal with. On the positive side, it grabs like nobody's business! I also don't have the problem with the clutch pedal getting stuck to the floor under high RPM shifting.

As for the flywheel, it's a lightweight model so it will induce noise from the transmission. What you hear is gear lash from the beefy gears in our trannys. The dual-mass flywheel was used to help eliminate this. However, they are expensive to replace as you've mentioned. I'd recommend using a heaver flywheel if you don't want to have chatter. The one I have is 11lbs...go with something in the 15-17lb range to minimize chatter.

Now the benefit to lightweight flywheels is a very quick acceleration/deceleration. The car feels much quicker if I row through the gears at high RPM vs. stock.

Good luck with your decision! Feel free to ask any more questions!
