if you have a bill of sale just go to the tag office and apply for a new one.

btw bill of sale, is a paper that shows you bought the car from who ever (transfer) if you cant get the person that sold you the car make one up and have someone sign it.

You will pay tax based on the purchase price on your bill of sale.I 'bought' my old Vanagon from my Dad. We just typed something up in MS Word listing the color, VIN, and year/make/model and signed it. We listed purchased price as $10 or something. Fayette Co accepted it with no problems. I cant remember if the $10 price gave me a super low tax or if the tax was based on some minimum value.

i believe the tax is based off the year of the ride, and county of residence. not the total sale

Theyll give you the title. You cant register it until you pass emissions...

they will look at if your car passed tests if your county requires them then they just look at your insurance (which you will need to show them) ask you to pay the tag fee and then youll get your tag

some counties here in Ga do not need cars to pass tests, to get a tag (eg:) my bronco is registed in another county and that county does not need to have tests, just pay the tag fee.

All 15? metro ATL counties require emissions testing. But seeing as how youre in Ringgold, you may not have to worry.

Have the ATL suburbs reached Ringgold yet?

maybe with in the metro area but for say (loganville) does not require testing (where i got my bronco tagged) now maybe with in a year or so they will prolly use testing because the city has grown so much with in the last 5 years. alot of counties do not require testing but with growth it will eventually change

Bill of Sale rule applies to vehicles 1985(maybe 86) and older. If it is newer, you must have the title. They are not supposed to give you a title if you do not have one in your hands. It is illegal. Just because someone does it, does not make it legal. Not to mention the fact that because it is a duplicate title, the person holding the original title can come and take the car at any time.

I am not trying to make you worry! But I am telling you what Happen to me. And I am In ATL, GA!

Lets just say you are going to have fun getting a title for that car! Reason why is because you have to track down the last person that own the car, Which should be the person that sold the car to the Junk Yard. I had a Problem at first with my HB because the person that sold me the car miss up the title. But Lets just say me and the seller had to track down the person that sold the car to him and write a bill of sale to me instand of him so I can get a title for the car. The Junk Yard can write whatever they want on the paper, it mean less to them, at the end DOT/Tag Office just going to tell you to find out who (Name, Where they live) is the last lawfull owner of the car to write you a Bill of Sale! When I say you, It mean DOT and Tag Office WILL NOT TELL YOU WHO AND WHERE THE LAST PERSON THAT OWN THE CAR!

So Good Luck on getting a title for that Baby!

But there is a Way you can somewhat own the car. Is by Buying a Title Bond, (GOOD LUCK ON FINDING A INSURANCE COMPANY IN GA THAT DOES IT). That was you have a Bonded Title and the car is yours. (Unless the person that org owned said you stole it or want it back.) (Which you have to give it back, even if you said he/she sold it to the junk yard) You will have a Reg Teg and buy reg insurance.

Hope this help alittle!

well, im going back tomorow to hopefully get the bill of sale. the guy that owns the junkyard told me his son owned the car and that it just had a blown head gasket. when i bought the car i was to excited abotu it and didnt think about the title, so when i called back he said he had told me he didnt have it. i think he sad that because he didnt want to get it for me or he lied to me, neither would surprise me. i dont think i have to worry about emissions aroudn here yet. i have heard they are getting prety strict in the chattanooga area though, wich is closer to me than atlanta. so assuming i dont need emisions, when i get the bill of sale i can just go to the tag place and show that and my insurence to them and i can get a new title? if it all goes my way...

darn that sucks... i guess you could use it as a parts car. does it have a salvage title? if not have it inspected for frame damage just incase. if thats all good and you still want the car just buy parts for it. BTW did he tell you that it was not road worthy before or after you paid him?

he never said it wasnt road worthy when i bought the car, as far as i can tell the frame is straight and the only body damage is a few dents and some scratches. when i get the motor fixed it should be just fine to drive on the road. i have no title at all for it, he said he didnt have it after i bought it and thought to ask for it. i am waiting on some results from pple doing free carfaxs to see what shows up there.

if im not mistaken there is a law here in GA (DISCLOSER LAW) that anyone who is wanting to sell a car/truck needs to fully explain in detail anything wrong with a car/truck. like for instance the bronco i have registerd in loganville... i have it for sale. it needs a shifter and has a small exhaust leak after the collector. anyone who has come by to ask about it i HAD to tell them that other wise i could get in serious trouble. now i dont know if you want to go through all that, i just wanted to let you know that.

as im sure you know car fax will only show up what has been noted by insurance companies/tag offices (sold/damage/repairs/ect.)

hopefully there isnt any real big problems, bodys can be straighted out, motors can be replaced.

if it has a salvage title it is a big issue to get it back "on track" with being road worthy. a buddy of mine bought a monte carlo it had hail damage and as something as simple as that it would have cost him alot of money to get it back on the road so he just trashed it (junk yard).

anyway these are just a few things ive delt with or seen so i wanted to let you know.

I don't believe disclosure laws apply to salvage vehicles.

Personally I wouldn't give you a bill of sale either. He is not a state Used car dealer and so he cannot sell cars. He can sell all the parts he wants, even parts cars, but he cannot sell you a car that will be made roadworthy unless he has a state dealer's license.

There is another legal way to do it. But it requires a lot of time, lawyers, court, and auctioning the car off.

thats the thing tho; if in fact the car has a salvage title.

the guy who sold him the car first only told him it had a blown head gasket, but then later to find out he was told he will not give the title, because it is not road worthy. thats wrong in my view.

well, i dont want to make it into a big huge deal with lawers and all that, to much time and money. i have no idea if it has a salvage title or not, he never said anythign about any type of title. but it makes me mad that he is telling me this now, because the whole time my intentions have been to make it roadworthy. i was telling a person i work with about it and she has a brother i think that works with car registration and stuff like that and she is gona get him to check it to make sure it isnt stolen , just in case. but she also mentioned a lost car title since it is over 10 years old. does anyone know what that is and how it works?

id be pissed to, thats how it was with a 240 coupe i wanted to buy the seller lied but i got out of the deal before i got my self stuck with a loss.

im pretty sure the "lost title" is like i was explaining before about how you can just use a bill of sale/ insurance and apply for a new title. you dont get a new title right away... it will come in a few months but at the tag office you will get a temp. title to show ownership.

can i use the reciept as a bill fo sale? i mean it shows i bought the car, and it shouldnt really matter if it says its for a parts car should it?

no you'll need to make up a sheet that has the owner name, date, type of car, vin# as is condition, sold to your name where its printed.. then have someone sign it.

then on the bottom youll have your printed name, signed, date

if you need to see what one looks like ill post a pic
