Installed a good brake booster and cylinder today into my car. I took them off of my other 240, which I had bought them for., meaning they were used, but still good. I installed them as one; I didn't take the cylinder off the booster when I did it.

Anyways, installed it all, started car up, and there is a sucking/blowing noise, can't tell which. It is coming from where my brake booster comes into the car, like if you get up under the dash inside the car, that's where the noise is. When I press the brake pedal all the way down, the noise stops, and my rpms drop down to like 5-6k and stay there, and my lights dim slightly. When I let off the brake, my rpms go back up, and my lights brighten up, and the noise comes back.

I reached up under the dash and tried to feel any air movement. I couldn't really feel anything. But I moved, with my hands, the rubber covering that is around the part of the brake booster that comes in under the dash, and I could hear a change in the noise, so it was affecting something. I don't really know what it is. It was dark by that time so I couldnt mess with it.

Getting ideas for when I go to fix it tomorrow. Anything?

Also, that little annoying pin you have to deal with when changing the booster, had fallen out when I went down there and looked at it. I don't think that would cause that problem, but just letting you know incase.

seconding replace the booster. I know money is always a issue. So are your brakes. Usually in my mind I compare the cost of safety related repairs to my cars or bikes to the cost of the deductable on my insurance policy and the possiblility of spending time in the hospital. Its cheaper to fix the vehicle right.

Sounds like the new booster had a bad diaphragm and you have a vacuum leak

can one of you actually explain how a bad booster would cause that..

and what's causing my loss of power when i press the brakes? I don't think a brake booster could cause that..

The booster is hooked up right to engine vacuum which is supposted to be sealed.

If the booster has a bad diaphragm it can allow external air to be sucked into the engine, unmetered of coarse . This would cause you to run rough/ lean/ and even rich when the ECU tries to compensate for the lean the 02 see's.

It sounds completely vacuum related.

where is that engine vacuum that it's hooked up to?

and where is the sucking/blowing noise coming from, cause I'm not feeling any air movement, just hearing it..

please take your car to a mechanic and have it fixed. the answers have been given to you already. google brake booster and do some research at least. if you replaced the booster and diddnt see the HUGE vacum line then i dunno...

There is one large vacuum line hooked to the booster, it makes it way to the intake. Check all the vacuum lines and see if that is loose at the booster. Its sucking air, not blowing so it might be hard to feel.

Spraying carb cleaner on the vacuum lines helps find a leak. If the engine bogs down some your near the leak.

This man is giving you very good advice. If you do not understand the system and are not able to understand what is being said to you please take it to a shop.

Today alone we saw calipers upside down, and brake pads installed with the metal backing plate placed facing the new rotors. Husband actually said "I did the hard part for you."

If you dont know how it works leave it alone.

I know how the brake system works, and I know that the big hose coming off the booster is a vacuum line, but the noise is on the inside of the car, so Ididn't think it'd be that. I checked it and it was pretty secure, no leaks I think.

Also, I reached up under the dash, where the booster comes in, and when I pushed that rubber covering towards the booster, it gained suction and the noise stopped. So I think there is sucking coming from the brake booster somehow? When I pressed the brake pedal, however, the rubber moved and the noise came back.
