Hey y'all, I'm Drew, new to this forum and 240s. I just came into a 92sx vert a little bit of body damage and some random little things wrong but i can't complain because I got the car for free. I've been doing some research into motor swaps. Now don't start burning me with "use the search", I have haha. I found some interesting things that way but it's not a great way to start conversations and introduce myself.

I've been looking at several motor/transmission combos and I've been talking to some other enthusiast and I keep getting some very mixed reviews. I'd love to drop a lq4/T56 combo because its been done so much that there's a lot of info on it but also its been done a lot...

what do y'all think of these swaps?

or a kat?

I dunno, more or less just bored in class and want to say hi, looking forward to hearing y'alls opinions

Hello Drew

Personally I would go SR if you want quick power and a quick swap.

Search noob!

J/K, welcome to the forums ;)

Gotta agree with RJ on the SR if you want something easy and fun. RB's are great, but cost more for just about everything. 2 more injectors, 2 more pistons, turbo manifolds cost more, etc....

KA-T's can be awesome, but aren't as easy as bolt it in/wire it up and go. If you have the money, LSx seems to be the way to go. 400WHP can be made easily with basic bolt ons and parts are everywhere for them.

All depends on what you want, and what you want to spend. What kinda budget are you working with for the engine/trans swap?

Also, got any pics of the shell? It pretty much a must for an introduction thread around here :bigthumb:

Yeah i'd love to post up some photos but i lost my camera and the car is in storage in florida, but its your run of the mill '92sx red with some slight body damage and in need of a tune up. i'm still in the process of getting the funds together for the build but i'm looking at about 6k budget for the build. for now i just want something fun that i can take to track days, i'd like to eventually be pushing some serious power (+500whp) but not for a while so i was already leaning toward ls motors but i think it would be pretty nasty to keep it jdm and have those kind of numbers.

like i said still doing research, my friend has a '94 KAt thats pretty nasty and i'd love to be able to yank him with my top down haha

thanks for the welcome guys i look forward to getting into this forum

You really need to get use to the 240 in stock form (especially given you estimated age). Saying you need 500hp is a bit insane. Anything over 300hp in these cars is a handful. As you get use to the car you'll understand more of what you want to do.

i agree that 500whp in a 240 is excessive, but i've also driven some ridiculous stuff and for some reason i absolutely love a car that is a challenge to drive. i plan on sittin on around 300whp for a while, i was just thinking for the future, which motor would allow for the most room for power increases so i don't end up wanting to do another swap down the road. for now, id love to do a swap and then focus on getting the car looking and handling the way i want it to and then start thinking about excessive hp. appreciate your opinion, i've never drivin a high power 240 so i don't know what they behave like but i definitely want to find out

300whp should be enough power for the time being I think. Its enough power to keep up with the cocky navy guys and their all motor cars lol

Hey Drew,
First off, welcome to the Vert club. A couple of quick questions for ya. Are you looking to drift the car? Are you looking for straight line drag racing? Are you looking for a street monster? I know the answer from any young guy would be yes.. all of them, but you're build for each of these are going to be different. Ease of swap - hands down the SR. If you send out your harnesses first, when you get it back you can swap out the KA and swap in the SR in a weekend (faster if you have a few hands to help out). I daily my SR with only a little bit of a bump in boost (pushing a modest 10-11 psi). I've dyno'd out at a steady 215 to the wheels. Now I will say it was hard to have fun before the upgrades I've done. Suspension (get them... get stronger spring rates if you can as verts are a bit heavier), Thicker sway bars front and rear (one of the single biggest cheap upgrades that changed the ride dramatically), LSD rear diff (open diffs are no fun.. period). I would have to agree that anything over 300 hp in these cars are a handful, but more in that you really can't hold traction without some serious upgrades. I think playing at the 250-300 level until you get used to the car would be a great start. I will also say that a lightweight flywheel and good clutch setup will also allow the engine to spin up faster and make boost faster. It is a fun platform to play with and lots of options to explore. SR = easiest, KA-T = a bit of motor work and purchase of turbo, ECU, Mani, wiring...etc, RB = big power potential, but expensive, harder to get parts, heavier motor - throws natural balance of car off a bit, Wiring, custom mounting kits, transmission swap issues, LSx = tons of torque, but not rev happy... transmission selection, custom driveshaft. From a bang for the buck standpoint- SR all the way. Hope that gives you a bit of insight or help.
Good Luck and get some pics up and hit the Registry. :badger

VH45... good power, good engine, no aftermarket hardly, difficult swap.

SR... easy, moderate power, room for omgwtfbbq power, very very very common swap, lots of aftermarket

RB... moderately popular swap, some aftermarket, good power, 6 cylinder :naughty:

Really depends on your taste. I would say VQ37 just to be different

awesome guys, lots of great info here! i'm really more into 1/4 and roll racing that's why i'm looking for high whp. when my friends and i roll to the local meets, you really need a 140 car to keep up, there's some stupid cars and crazier drivers haha. either way i really just want a fun fast car, i've got a ninja right now but i feel like street bikes are cheating when it comes to going fast so i'm ready to step it up and play with the big boys so i need a fast car too
