I recently purchased a 2015 SV Rogue and really like everything about except.

When stopped and in gear you can hear the motor. It isn't loud, you can just hear it. There is no doubt that your engine is running.
I traded in a 2010 SUV with 70k miles, a number of times I got out of the vehicle not realizing that I hadn't shut it off. Super quiet.

Is this normal with the Rogue and/or the newer 4 cylinders or do I have a possible issue ????????????

how can we tell, over a forum what noise you are referring too? no video, no audio clip, nothing.

I guess you can't understand it when someone says that they can hear the engine running when at a stop, it has to have a ping pang wally wally bing bang or something.
Sorry I bothered you experts. Please disregard my question I will look elsewhere.

Seriously? We're not psychic or telepathic. Asking if we think your engine sounds too loud without uploading a youtube or soundcloud clip is pointless. Don't get all butthurt because you can't take the time to give us an audio clip for reference.

Tell you what though, even without a decibel reading from a sound meter, I'll take a stab at it. Your engine is operating within designed parameters, and the sound level is normal. Don't believe me? Well your vehicle is brand new and under full manufacture's warranty. Take it back to the dealership and ask the head mechanic for their opinion.

Sound levels are very user specific as to what is too loud. Speaking for myself, my previous car was a 2003 PT Cruiser w/ turbo. Compared to that car, my 2014 Rogue is very quiet. Other people consider it to have a loud engine and loud transmission whine. Honestly, I barely notice these things because MY perspective is that the blower fan for heat & A/C on this car is far louder than I am used to and it drowns out most other car noises that I am used to hearing.

This is my way of "nicely" agreeing with the others. If you include something that lets me compare your engine noise to mine, then I an chip in with "that sounds the same as mine", or "that is much louder than mine".

So, my personal answer would be that I do not hear the engine noise at stop. That could be due to my almost 50 year old ears, or it could be that my engine is quieter than yours.

My question was really quite simple, for an average person with average hearing, is the Rogue engine louder than most suv's in the same category. I realize in order to tell I should attach audio clips from all the other small suvs for comparison. Of course I should also determine which suvs are considered to be in the same category.
I suppose that if I wear a hearing aid then the volume could be set too high, or if it is quiet it could be the hearing aid battery.
Not being an expert, I can say that the Rogue is louder than my Mitsubishi Outlander, Honda Accord and neighbors Rav4.
Is this normal with the Rogue and/or the newer 4 cylinders or do I have a possible issue ????????????
Is this question really that tough for anyone familiar with Rogues ?

Did you not read this???

You keep asking us to tell you if your engine sound is abnormally loud WITHOUT our ability to hear it. I'm really starting to think you're just trolling.

Once again...

Bobbee - Welcome to the forum BTW. In your opening post you didn't say what SUV you were comparing your Rogue to, but understand that the Rogue is a chain-driven camshaft (vs. belt drive) and has no insulation in the engine bay other than the firewall (at least on the S version). Both of these factors contribute to what you hear when you're near the running vehicle. I'm guessing that Nissan engineering didn't consider sound output much of an issue when they were designing the QR25DE engine. They're a good, reliable engine with millions of them in service worldwide.
ImStricken has some good commentary on the reliability and longevity benefit of chain drive vs. belt drive here on the forum, and I've seen hood insulation available online for Rogues that don't have it. If the vehicle is too noisy for you, you'll have to decide what you want to do.

Last post, not trolling just getting a kick out of the replies.
If you asked me if the CX5 ride is a little choppy compared to other suvs in its category, I could answer yes without any high tech measuring equipment.
I simply ask if the Rogue engine is a little louder than most suvs and no one seems to know unless I attach audio files etc.
Seems like any one who has owned one for a while you may have noticed how it compares their previous cars, neighbors etc.
But I guess not here.

good.
this is an entry level economical car = expect things like sound deadening materials to be withheld, to keep the price low. many makers take away such features as sound deadening, in place of trinkets like iphone connections, usb ports, etc.
It isn't loud, you can just hear it. There is no doubt that your engine is running.
it is, what it is. you get what you pay for.

ok

to hear the engine within the cabin? yes. but then again, my ears have hear 20,000+ rounds of ammunition in my life, explosions, etc. i dont hear as well, as people my age. so its subjective. THIS IS WHY WE ASKED FOR A SOUND CLIP OR VIDEO! WE DONT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE HEARING!! WE CANT TELL HOW LOUD YOUR ENGINE IS(compared to our cars)!!!!!
or do I have a possible issue ????????????
AND HOW ARE WE TO TELL!? WE CANT HEAR YOUR CAR!!!!
FOR ALL WE KNOW YOU COULD HAVE:
1. TIMING CHAIN RATTLE DUE TO LOW OIL PRESSURE
2. TIMING CHAIN CHATTER DUE TO BROKE CHAIN GUIDES
3. TIMING BELT SQUEEKS
4. A/C CLUTCH GRINDING(when engaged)
5. PULLY BEARING FAILURE GRINDING/WHISTLE NOISE
6. INTERNAL BEARING FAILURE(clunks, taps)
7. PISTON SLAP DUE TO INTERNAL DAMAGE
8. TYPICAL QR ENGINE TAPPING WHEN COLD
9. EXHAUST RATTLE
ETC - ETC - ETC - ETC - ETC - ETC - ETC - ETC - ETC - DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHY WE ASKED FOR A SOUND CLIP? WE CANT TELL WAHT YOU ARE HEARING - IN ORDER TO TELL YOU THIS IS NORMAL, MATCHES UP WITH OUR CAR, ETC.

THIS THREAD IS LOCKED UNTIL YOU SUPPLY AN AUDIO/VIDEO CLIP pm rogueone or myself, when you are ready to help us, help you.
