Just purchased as new 2014 Rogue SL w/ Premium for pickup in a few days.

Mulling over the extended warranty question. Sometime we jump in when the cost is reasonable, other times we just pass, esp if manufacturer warranty is long. . Long ago we were turned off when we had a legit mechanical issue and dealers said " oh sorry, THAT part isn't covered". We generally stopped buying extended warranties after that, and have been lucky.

For the Rogue, the standard 3 year warranty plus 5 yr power train is ok, but not that great. And the CVT issue might still be around, so we are looking into it further.

We do very low mileage ( ie 10,000 km annually), so its really about the time component. We intend to keep the Rogue a long time (its the second car in a two-car family)

Dealer quoted us on a 7 year plan - just over $2100 for 84 months / 80,000 km (about 50,000 miles). Sound high, ie will I otherwise spend $2100 in repairs in the first 50,000 miles???...but at $300 a year perhaps its reasonable! Its for the NIssan Platinum plan (which also covers, rentals, tire road hazard, towing, trip interruption, etc.. kinnda stuff the good credit cards also cover)

Thoughts?

Are there third party vendors out there that owners have had good experience with that might be more reasonable? We contacted CarChex but that don't offer coverage in Canada.

Just purchased a Rogue today and currently Nissan is giving the additional 5yr warranty as a special bonus incentive for 2014 models. I ended up upgrading it to the gold level and the option to have the extended warranty cash returned after 5 years if we don't use it.

Can you elaborate on the new warranty incentive? What did you end up paying for the 5 yr Gold coverage? (ref: cash returned if not used)

We were originally quoted 5 years/80,000 Km/Platinum for $1480 plus tax. Doesn't seem worth $1500 to extend basic warranty by two years, given its already 5 years on powertrain.

UPDATE -

Are you referring to the MY choice incentives where you can choose cash discount OR the 5 year gold plan??

I just bought as well, but went for the $1250 cash incentive plus a discount off the car (close to Unhaggle.com "invoice" pricing. Dealer costs are of course lower than those prices, but was a hefty discount regardless.)

Yes, it was one of the MY choice options and I also received the $1250 cash incentive even though I am financing. For an additional $500 I upgraded the 5yr to the Gold level coverage and for $475 I will get $3500 plus tax returned to me after 5 years if the extended warranty isn't used. Hopefully I won't need to use the extended warranty and have peace of mind to get money back so it was a no brainer to get that option.

Understood re $500 for 5 yr Gold...but not following the reference to $475 ??
(I assume the $3500 reference is a typo and you mean to write $500.)

Also, there is a little hitch with the money back thing and its more of sales tactic. First time you use the extended warranty in year 4 and 5, no matter how small the item, no more money back. So you need to be very careful what the dealer replaces on warranty. We had this on our Toyota, and its a bit of a crap shoot. Do you let them put though that first $100 item on warranty (and lose your future refund), or keep the warranty claim-free and pay out of pocket. What about the next $150 repair, and the next $250 part, etc etc.

So yup, if never needed ,its great to get the money back, and if its needed for a big repair, yup, great to be covered, but if its a slow gradual thing here and there over the years, it gets more complicated.

The whole point is peace of mind, so with our Toyota, we just let them cover whatever came up "under warranty", and never looked back.

The $475 was to "insure" the warranty to be able to get $3500 plus tax returned (not a typo) if not used in years 3 & 4.

hu_guy -So are you saying for extended warranty, you paid $500 plus $475 plus $3500 (and the $3500 is returned if never used , otherwise a sunk cost if used for any claim) ?????

Hey are you getting 2 years extended warranty through Nissan Canada, with Zero deductible? If yes, then I think its a great deal for $750!
I bought mine for $1100 :(

No.

1. The 5 years warranty was one of the My choice options that I selected.
2. For $500 I upgraded to to Gold level coverage
3. Paid $475 to insure it

Insuring it allows me to get $3500 plus tax if I don't use the extended warranty in years 3 or 4.

Not sure how Nissan comes up with $3500 but you get more back than you put in which is why I opted to upgrade.

hu_guy, If it were me, for $975, I would never bring the car back to the dealer for 5 years, to guaranty I get $3500 back. I'd be worried they'd replace some part and say the warranty was used ! Getting $3500 back is a great deal.

A) More important, Is the $3500 a Nissan guaranty or a dealer thing? I don't see it posted anywhere.

B) Did they offer you the option just to go with (1) only...ie 5 year warranty, non-Gold, no cost? I assume this is the standard 3 yr warranty extended to 5 years. Also a good deal for no money!

In years 3 and 4 I will avoid little in-warranty repairs if they occur but of course if I need it for something more serious, then it's available. The $3500 is returned to me from Nissan (will verify when I speak to them again) as a cheque (cash). I could have stayed with the 5 year warranty and not upgraded it to gold but I felt for the price and premium return guarantee, it was worth the upgrade.

Did the "free" upgrade to 5 yr warranty have a mileage limit, ie 60,000 km?

If may ask, what dealership?

Still curious why detail such ioffers are not made available on the Nissan.ca ( other than the generic My Choice reference).

The 5yr warranty ups the mileage to 100,000km. I spoke to the dealership (401 Dixie Nissan) and the $500 I paid is to upgrade to Gold level coverage but shows up on my bill of sale as the Platinum warranty and is a Nissan warranty (Nissan Added Security Plan - ASP http://www.nissan.ca/en/owners/service- ... lease.html). The $475 is a 3rd party insurance policy that pays the $3500 plus tax if I don't use the warranty in years 3 and 4. I assume this insurance varies by dealership and some dealers don't have that option.

Interesting offers. I didnt get those offers, but I paid cash and you financed - that may be a factor. On top of the extended warranty you described, did you also get a healthy discount off the car and/or adjustment on your trade??? Lots of room for a dealer to play with as we know,

I used CarCostCanada and the free Unhaggle.com pricing reports to start the negotiations. After visiting 4 different dealers, I made the deal at the one who gave me the most for my trade-in. I don't think the dealer made very much on the new car and will probably make more re-selling my trade-in.

Did essentially the same. I think between Unhaggle, CarCostCanada, CanadianBlackBook and Autotrader and 2 or 3 trade-in estimates, one can make a well-informed deal.
