I just purchased a new 2009 g37x sedan this weekend. I noticed in the manual that it says to not use the cigarette lighter port as an accessory outlet. Is this a real problem, or are thye just being overly concerned? If I'm not suppose dot use it, that means I only have the single outlet in the center console, whihc seems quite restrictive, as I can only use or charge one device at a time...

What device do you want to charge?

You know the power output is limited on cars. Here is the story of mine few weeks ago went to ski. The way home at night It was cold and snowing and my son and his friend at the back was using his DS and it was on charge thru the center console. Than my wife says well my lap top is dead need to be charged. I'm like oh boy. So put the converter thru the cigarette lighter and off we go. Since the weather was crappy I was driving under speed limit around 2k rpm. After few miles I noticed the car started to fog inside. It never does it in auto mode. So I tried to change the heat direction to the windshield. It did not change it at all.

Than it clicked in. I pulled over turned a car on and off. Still the same. So I decided to turn it off little longer. I stopped for a coffee with my family and after the coffee turned on with no issue. The car could not handle the load. It was only running on 2k rpm and the lights were on heated seats were on charging the DS and the lap top was just too much.I told my wife to use her phone to fiish the job she started on the lap top. So if I were you I would think twice to charge and run too many things at the same time. So much the car can handle.

It reminds me it is not a generator it is a car. LOL

An interesting point, I suppose laptops off the car are a bad idea But I just want to be able to plugin my GPS and cell phone at the same time... I figured I would do what I normally do, plug the GPS into the front port, and put the cell phone in the center console... now I am worried the cigarette lighter / front port doesnt provide normal voltage or something.

As a salesman I frequently charge my laptop and cell phone or power GPS while driving my car is normally at 2800-3200 RPM though.

On my Hemi Ram I had an electric fan from a 1989 Mercury Sable Wagon. If the engine was turning less then 2000 rpm I was using more electricity then I was making :-)

Sound slike it is not much of an issue. I was worried that maybe they didn't guarantee a steady 12v feed on the port.

Yeah I think higher rpm would help.

Also I think if you have a 12v charger it is better than my lap top 110 converter. Also keep in mind it was really cold and night. So all the light were on plus the heat with chargers, etc

it comes down to current more than voltage... so the gps, cell phone, radar dector dont pull much current... so having those all on at the same time wont hurt nothing... but add a labtop or other high current devices and you exceed the amount of current produced by the alternator...

so if you plug a labtop let that be the only thing plugged in until you are finished with the labtop... it shouldnt matter which plug you are using unless one plug has a different current level... I.E. check to see if the cig lighter plug has the same fuse number as the acc plug in your fuse box...

in my 2005 g35x they are the same.
