So last week I picked up a New (to me obviously) 2005 G35 coupe with about 37k miles on it. I'm already pretty thrilled with it and it let me throw my 240 in the back yard where I can actually get to work on restoring it without having to worry about it being roadworthy until I'm done. Overall the condition of it is very sound but I have a couple questions people may be able to answer for me.
For starters, it only came with 1 key. I am fully aware of how the key needs to be programmed, but what I'm not sure of is what kind of response I'll get from a dealer if I brig them a blank key and ask them to cut/program it themselves. Is this something they are generally receptive to? Their parts guy is out until Wed. so I'm not really getting many answers when I call yet. If I can I plan on buying the remote and blank key myself off of ebay or elsewhere, programming the remote manually, and having them just reprogram the keys. Assuming it saves money (other searches on here seem to indicate it would) it's what I want to do but I'm just curious if anyone has ever had a dealer give them guff for getting an uncut key from somewhere else to be programmed. Everything I've read so far seems like it shouldn't be an issue but I just have this nightmare scenario in my head of driving an hour to the dealer just to have them give me crap for half an hour over not ordering a key from them.
Next, I knew going in that the clearcoat, especially on the bumper, isn't the most solid substance out there and there are a couple places on the bumper where it looks like clearcoat had flaked but the paint is still in good condition. I found some articles & threads on here but they only seem to address when the clearcoat still exists and just has blemishes to be removed or involve sanding and outright painting. I'm just hoping for a solution to protect those couple spots so the exposed paint doesn't turn into chipped or peeling paint. I'm weighing the option of a clearbra but it would be a while before I bothered even if I decide yes so for now I'm hoping to just grab a can of touch-up clear coat, like the dupli-color stuff of something, and just do a wash-dry-spray of the spots. Anyone have any experience with this? If need be I can hit up the exterior forum but I'm just, perhaps naively, hoping I'll be able to get a quick and clean answer on this one.
Third, It had full documentation, the neat little first aid kids in the trunk and back console, the full owners manual, the whole shebang. In the owners' manual box (if you can call a square leather pouch a box) there was a foam insert with cutouts for what looks like 3 small tools or something, but nothing in them. At first I thought maybe the keys, but they don't really look it. Anyone happen to know what came in those? Not an important thing but something I'm curious about.
