Anything that applies to the D22 Frontier applies to the Xterra. Same vehicle for the most part.
Do the timing belt if you don't know when it was done last.
Change fluids, check belts, hoses, etc. If any of that stuff is original, it's 16 years old and likely in need of replacement.
Auto trans - (assuming it's an auto) - check color of the fluid. If brown or burnt, consider a flush.
Plugs, cap, rotor, wires would be a good idea.
Otherwise, drive it.
