Anything that applies to the D22 Frontier applies to the Xterra. Same vehicle for the most part.

Do the timing belt if you don't know when it was done last.
Change fluids, check belts, hoses, etc. If any of that stuff is original, it's 16 years old and likely in need of replacement.
Auto trans - (assuming it's an auto) - check color of the fluid. If brown or burnt, consider a flush.
Plugs, cap, rotor, wires would be a good idea.

Otherwise, drive it.

Frontier fascia is a little bit different but can be adapted to work. The 98-00 Frontiers have a body color steel strip under the grill that's not there on the Xterras, and the bottom of the turn signal part of the front fender wraps around a little further on an Xterra than it does on a Frontier. I have Xterra fenders on my D22 pickup and had to trim about an inch off the fenders there to get them to fit properly.

As I see those alloy wheels, look at them closely for cracks. Believe they had a TSB or possibly an outright recall on that style of wheel. The cracks will be evident on the spokes if present.

um....truck doesn't have strut towers.

What you suggest would not be a smog legal swap, but if you don't have inspections, so be it. Unless you're dropping in a TT motor, the modest HP gain wouldn't be worth the trouble unless your VG33 is dying anyways.

Vg33 is starting the death roll. 202000k on the odo,vg30de is lil easier to rebuild. big back orders and no aftermarket support has plagued me so far. A vh41 is a dream, but custom fab will burn up my budget fast. How ever i still dont think any swap is possible
