I'm researching another problem and I talked to Infiniti service about the timing chain and they said it never needs to be replaced. Has anybody else heard this or heard differently?

Yes I have. I had the same reply when i inquired about changing the timing chain on my 96 Maxima. They said that the chains never need replacing, only when they break, they are replaced.

I had 150k on my 97 240sx when I sold it, and the chain was fine. . Probably true :o

That applies to the 3.5 engine. I also believe there was a pretty decent thread about this matter a few months ago. Try searching.

It's probably been asked, but I didn't find it when searching.

Can you change a VG33E over to a timing chain? I plan on keeping mine for a long time (forever) and don't like the aspect of having to spend $1K again in 100K miles.

Planning on doing that VH45 piston swap in about 5 years and if possible will change it to a timing chain. Just need to know if it's possible.

It'd probably be easier to swap the engine. Personally, I really want a turbo diesel from Terrano.

They get pretty decent economy as well.

Shnikes. I'll have to look at it when I have a garage and pull the engine for the bottom end rebuild. Only 5 years away

As for the diesel, I hate to be the bearer of bad news... but it's illegal to convert a gasoline equiped vehicle to diesel in the good ol' US of A. Thank you hippies!

I already checked into it when I heard there was a diesel engine for nissans as I wanted to run biodiesel (and put a sick turbo on it!) but oh well. Just have to make what I got bigger and faster.

It's illegal? Man that sucks. . I could get by with it where I live, however. We have no inspections at all.

I'm sure there are other barriers to stop me though, such as electrical wiring and the like

The other route sounds fine to me tho. . high compression / Q45 pistons / 93 octane fuel, etc. .

But I sure as hell wouldn't want this as my daily driver when that happens. (I want an M30 to drive around)

Yeah, but the beauty of the bottom end rebuild is that if you build up everything else to really feed it, you can expect mpg increases of 5-10 mpg overall. That's what am I planning, so I can afford to drive this sucker when gas goes over $4 gallon

Forgot to mention though that you'll have to run premium most likely, unless you can map an ecu to let you run cheaper. But still, if you can get the mileage increase you'll save yourself hundreds of dollars a year.

The project can pay for itself!
