Drove home last night in my 2009 murano, 2 hours into the Nor' Easter. I've never been so scared. I've had 4-wheel drive most of my adult life. I've never sailed thru a stop sign in the snow... But it happened in my Murano. The ABS was a pumpin' and my heart was a thumpin'. We just slide right into the intersection. I thought it was me at first, but it happens serveral times while driving, and trying to stop on the interstate. Speeds never exceeded 25 mph, all the way home... a very long trip, indeed.

I've 20" toyo's and don't want to drive this car the snow again. But, if I have to, does anyone have any advice or a similar tale of woe?

Phil P.

You could try getting better tires (Snow tires).

It sounds like your ABS was doing its job, and your tires are to blame. Get better tires. The Murano performs very well in snow (in most circumstances), and stops just as well...

Sliding with the ABS kicking and AWD??? Hmmm...sounds like your tires were completely shot (hard to believe being a 2009), OR....the more logical explanation...you were sliding because there was ice on the road.

It doesn't matter what you are driving, or what tires you have, there is very little to anything you can do if ice is the culprit. I used to live in upstate NY and took my 2009 Murano through 12" snow last year to test it and the thing barely broke a sweat.

Stay off the ice, unless you want to chain or stud your tires, neither of which is really an option :-)

My experience has been that the Murano goes so well in the snow that I get a false sense of security and thus a quick realization that I can't stop as quick as I think I can. I now take it a little easier and do plenty of brake checks when driving on covered roads.

I don't mean to be a jerk but, have you ever driven in the snow before???Out here in the west ( Seattle) we get the Cascade concrete type of snow... Very icy, wet nasty road conditions in the mountians.. I've driven hundreds of miles between Seattle and Spokane in the snow.. I've owned many vehicles 4X4, AWD, Muscle cars, motorcycles, and the two Murano's I've owned (05, 09 AWD) are by far the best vehicles I've ever driven in the snow/ice.. this is with the stock 20" tire that are on the car..(I don't even carry chains) I'm not sure about locking it in AWD, I normally let traction control do its thing.I'm sorry for your bad experience, and also suggest having the tires checked outI have always felt very safe in the Mo, and very rarely expeirience any slipping in either Mo that I've owned..

I'll second that about our snow here in the Northwest, it's high early cement, wet, heavy, turns to ice as soon as a couple of vehicles drive on it. I have run our mountain passes in the absolute worst conditions (Stevens Pass to Wenatchee, dead of winter, blizzard conditions) and that was with convention all season tires, and never had issues. Only one experience with the new Mo, light snow and ice rain this year, and it's AWD was quite impressive, this with the OEM 20" all seasons tires.

One of the scariest things in the world... Sliding on ice is about as bad as it gets on the road! I have the same 20" Toyos on my 09 LE and it's handled very well in the snow here on Long Island (NY). Any suggestions on a "better" tire? I love the performance on my Mo and can't believe it could get much better!
