Neutral Position Switch

[40's Nissan]

Can someone tell me exactly what the Neutral Position Switch does for a 95 200SX SE (GA16DE with 5SPD manual). I can't seem to find anything (even in my FSM) describing it's actual function or purpose. This is a curiosity question more than anything.....since I can't seem to find the answer, I am further compelled to do so.

i *think* that it is a "safety" switch, to keep from over reving in neutral or to disengage the cruise control if it pops out of gear or somthing like that
