Just thought that I would let somebody know. Since I've had this car, it has been one thing or another with the coilpacks. I tried a couple of coilpacks from different cars. I found that neon coilpacks were easy to wire in, cheap and rev cleanly all the way to redline.

On a different note: My car was in Pleasant Grove, Alabama when the tornado came through.

However, I have risen above that and drifted the b**** anyways! No windows or windshield. Its really nice to have the tears ripped from your eyes while driving. Guess it will have to be a truck.

Here is a short photo set:

Also: Someone might want to throw this coilpack info into the FAQ because it is impossible to find.

Pics and writeup of some sort, and I'll get it into the FAQ.

Dang man. My s13 is at a friend's house for my CA swap, and it wasn't until 2 days ago that I saw it again to make sure it didn't get thrashed. Fortunately it's fine.

Good to see that you're making the best of a bad situation. And I'll be grabbing any Neon coilpacks I come across in the junkyard today.

Alright! Here is my quick and easy write up for CA18det coilpack replacement.

I used the coilpack from a 2005 Dodge Neon.

I used:
-Neon coilpack
-Neon coilpack pigtail
-"build your own" plug wire kit from local parts store
-soldering stuff
-heat shrink

First: Find the four coil signal wires. They should be red-green, red-white, red-blue and solid red. Follow them back from the coils to a place near the firewall.

Cut the wires, leaving enough length to position the new coilpack where you want it in the engine bay.

Solder the signal wires for cylinders 1 and 4 together. Solder the wires for cylinders 2 and 3 together.

Image

Plug the Neon pigtail into the Neon coilpack. Looking at it, the wires on each side goes to its corresponding coil. The center wire is for switched 12v power.

Image

The red-blue/red-green should be on the right side for cyls 1/4. The red/red-white should be on the left for cyls 2/3.

I had extra wire (red) soldered in before the pigtail from when I had wired up other coilpacks during testing.

Solder the appropriate joined signal wires to their corresponding pigtail wire. Also solder the center wire on the pigtail to switched 12v power.

Image

The coils are labeled for each cylinder.

Image

I heat shrinked all of my solder points for cleanliness and durability.

I still haven't chosen a mounting spot for the coilpack, but I will post a pic if I come up with something.

As for plug wires, I built custom lengths using a kit from my local auto parts store. I'm sure others can be found to work, but the custom ones are super long!

The coilpack runs around $80 at the parts store or $15 at my local junk yard. The wire kit was $50. Everything else, I had lying around.

The result is a clean rev, all the way to redline. I am only running stock boost so, be wary, overboosters! Good luck and have fun!

Thanks! Let us know if you have any issues with it when you turn up the boost. Notice any overheating with this? My guess is that when you turn the boost up, that you'll have problems, as I doubt the dwell time is long enough for these coils, but that should make it run cooler in the meantime.

I drove it 250mi to Holly Springs,MS on friday. When I got there, I drove in the Traction Optional drift event. Then I drove it back home to Birmingham that night. Problems = 0. Enjoy!

My setup: stock internal CA18DET w/ unknown miles, neon coilpack w/ 8mm wires, sohc maf, small front mount intercooler, stock boost, no blow off valve, Nismo fuel pressure regulator @ around 26-28lbs at idle, 0.9mm plug gap.

I did forget to put my shield down a few times. Had fun though. Also got featured on OMGDRIFT.COM with two other AL guys.

I was planning to bring the S12, but the day before the # 2 coil pack took a dump....so I drove the M6 up there instead
My new coil should be here in a few days

Just an update: Everything is running really good. Drove in my own drift event with the rest of AlabamaDrift on June 26th. It was hot but we had fun. The car did great. I have decided to go back to an S13, but will be keeping my CA and putting it into it's rightful chassis. At least I have some good memories with my beat up POS drifter.

Great drift shot. Sorry the Tornado did a number on the S14, but I'm glad to hear you're not abandoning the engine with new chassis.

Old thread, I know, but was curious if this setup was still working good for you? I might have to run this setup since I'm not sure if my stock coilpacks have been problematic or not, and Spitfire's are just too damn expensive. And what year Neons will work?

Oh and also, are you coming to the KMS drift event here in Huntsville this weekend? I'm hoping a lot of you Birmingham guys show up. Huntsville has stepped their game up tremendously in preparation for this event.

I wish that I was coming to KMS! I actually moved to Arizona and sold the chassis and CA. There were a few hiccups(there were flames) under heavy boost every now and then, but the benefits and low cost outweighed that. The hiccups could have been due to other things also.

I used packs from a 2005.

the coil packs from an 03-05 dodge neon srt-4 wire up the same and deliver more spark. plus they can support tons of HP and take the heat of a turbo.

You didn't change the Dwell settings in the ECU, and they work fine?

Been a while since anyone has posted on this... I have a question if anyone might know the answer. You wired up your neon coil to your stock CA ignitor correct?I don't believe it is possible for it to work without it. I am working on a DET in my USDM Pulsar NX utilizing the existing harness so my color code is different. I continuity tested my ignitor the other day and found it was pooched. Going out to find one in a local junkyard hopefully this weekend. Figured I might like to give the srt coil's a try if they are easy enough to come by as well.
