First, im 20, my neighbor is in late 30's - early 40s. Over the past few years, one of my neighbors have just had one hell of a problem with me and my car. He even had the guts to come to my house and try and tell me that my car is too loud and that i need to be more quiet, but in a WAY more rude of a manor. Lets just say that didn't sit well and i put him in his place

After that, the cops started to be called. They showed up a few times last saying just to keep it down and after hearing the car, they kind of shrugged it off and went on their way. After JUST getting my car back on the road and out of winter storage last week, the cops have been here twice already. The first time was a "hey, ok you're not doing anything wrong". The second time, which was this Monday, the cop came up saying things like:

"I'm here to solve the problem, if we have to go to court we will, if i have to take the car, I will." Needless to say that these are NOT flying high with me. So the cop left, and came back with a decibal meter and the noise ordinance laws for my city and would you guess that my CA18DET S13 w/ 3 resonators and a 3" turbo back exhaust would be below 65dB? DAMN RIGHT IT IS! The cop was appauled that the neighbors were so pissed about this as when the car was in the garage, the ambient noise in the middle of the street was louder than my car.

Here is a video of the exhaust:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnvaQ3oa710

Now I'm legal and they can't do anything about it Decibal reading in garage at muffler tip - 88.9dBDecibal reading in garage at street level - 62.5dB

For the record, raw sounding exhausts are not beloved by many folks over the age of 30. What might sound great to you, may sound like a loud gross post-Taco Bell fart to them. Keep that in perspective.

Methinks there are parts to the story missing, like the time of day you're running the car in your driveway, and whether you were revving it up excessively. It sounds like from what you said your neighbor was being overly sensitive, but when you said " you put him in his place" sounds like you behaved just as poorly as he did

It seems to me there can be a happy medium if the two of you speak civilly to one another. You both live there. It doesn't matter if your car technically passes a decibel test. Just work out a friendly arrangement with the old guy. You agree to be mindful of the revs and come/go as quietly as possible at the times he needs it quiet, like early morning, and in exchange, he can ease up on the complaints.

if you're just sitting out in the garage revving for no reason, yeah, I'd have a problem.

This may not be a popular opinion on my part but... There is a paper trail now and tests showing that your car is within legal code. If he does it again file a harassment suit on him, it will make him think twice before calling the cops over something as stupid as a noise ordnance. With the paper trail that he has created and the tests the local PD administered in your driveway he has essentially hung himself. You'll get restitution for his behavior and he'll learn a valuable lessen not to F with you, it will be a win/win for you.

Me putting him in his place is when he came to my house, and thought he could throw his weight around and tell me what to do because I was 18 at the time. Approaching someone in a rude manor for the first time is unacceptable and I let him know that. There were a few occassions of excessive revving, but nothing earlier than 3pm or later than 7pm in the summer months.

In my eyes, there will never be able to be an agreement between the neighbor and I. I've told the Police numerous times that I do not speed, rev, or drive excessively down my road. I've kept it as quiet as can be the past two years, and still the police are called. The times he has called the cops on me this year so far, the car wasn't even on the road or insured.

nope, that was only for the clip of the CXRacing exhaust haha. That was last summer also btw.

I'll keep that in mind and say something to the police if they ever show up again. The last officer to come here the other day said all complaints would be sent to him and that the decibal readings he took the other day would be on the roll call board so that every officer on shift knows about it. My car is almost famous in the small town of Bay City, Michigan

Perhaps you can take the high road and approach him with an olive branch and see if he'll discuss it with you calmly and maturely. And if the idiot tries to escalate it with anger, don't react. Just calmly remind him that getting angry will not solve anything, and the police have already confirmed you're not breaking any laws. If he continues to be unreasonable, then you can calmly suggest if he keeps this stuff up, you will be left little choice but to file harassment charges against him and it'll be a easy win given the documentation.

Another thought is if the neighbor is married, perhaps his wife will be a little more mature to discuss it.
