i know it looks long, but i would greatly appreciate your time and input, anything would help. thanks!

so today i went to a dealership today and a new guy comes to help me. he doesnt know jack about the car or its powerplant. but he was a cool guy and we ended up talking bout his own car most of the time.

the car is a 03 M45 with 40,XXX miles and on the paper, it listed "market price 30,000" then it said their price of "24,000" then i told them i saw online it went for 21,000. i was lookin at around 23,000 out the door. i checked the car for about an hour just the exterior cosmetics. had many chips and scuffs/scratches as well as chipping damage to the grill. i went and talked to the manager and told him, "straight up i want this car but im not looking to go over 20,000 out the door with it" (which is a negotiation price drop of 2,000" then he said, "straight up, this is what i paid for the car, he showed me a paper with a list of car and prices and i read on top it said "inventory prices..." the price said something like 20,800 for the M45. in my head, i said "this is total bull****, this is probably just any piece of paper saying a price. the guy then says "best i can do is give you employee discount, around 500 off." he said hes had the car 2 months and if it doesnt sale next week, hell return it back to wholesale.

i then took the car for a drive with the salesman. VERRRRY SMOOOTH. =] i talked to the guy on a personal level (he was early twenties). i told him i want us to help each other, he helps me buy lowering price, i help him by buying it (it would be his first sale) i told him to work something out with his manager that i would go max of 20,500 out the door. tell him that he has lots of cosmetic flaws and it should deface value of the car significantly.

1) the paper he showed me listed the car as 20,800 and hes selling the car for 21,000. was that paper BS? i dont think he bought that car that expensive.

2) is 2 months an average time they keep cars? would he return it back to wholesale.

3) should i be able to lower price significantly, due to the fact that there are many paint chips, light scratches, scuffs, and minor grill damage?

any tips on how i should negotiate this situation?

Do you have cash or financing already ready to go??? If yes, then I would go back in a few days and show them and tell them you want the car for 20,500 and you have payment ready to go. If they say they cant then thank them for their time and walk away. It doesnt seem like it is a deal that you cannot just walk away from. If it had perfect exterior and everything else that you may have seen wrong, then it would be, but that is not the case. Keep looking and you will find one in your price range. ORYou could tell them that you will pay what the lowest price they told you IF they take care of the paint flaws. Its worth a try. 2 months on the lot is 2 months of wasted space to them. Cheers and good luck

I bought mine infiniti 2k3 m45 with 36k miles (2month ago). The price he asked for aws 19.8K i dropped him down to 18.8k. Out the door i paid $150 in documenatation fees and another $1300 in taxes. However mine is flawless. One scuff on 1 rim but i swapped it with the spare. No scratches or dents on the body.

While i was buying the car i took a quick peek at the guys excel sheet while he went to go take a piss. He paid $15,750 for it at a auction, assuming some documentation and transportation costs he still made $2k on the vehicle. Judging from this i would say that the dealership u went to is either a complete dumbass or that sheet they showed u was Bullsh1t. And considering that it is not out of business i would put money on the later.

I think you lost a lot of bargaining power and leverage the minute you told him that you straight up want the car.

at our dealer, we have trouble keeping the 03 M's on the lot... There is a list of people one of the sales guys call to get them here when they are in... We have 2 silver ones they are getting ready to put on the lot... The last ones we had were on the lot less than a week before sold...

IMHO, this car sells quick... but that may only be here...

audi: yea im gonna get a student loan out (best loan ever) and pay it in full. but they all tell me, it doesnt matter if they get full cash or it is financed. im sure they prefer all cash though.

bhudda: great deal man, i noticed online, the M's are going cheaper over there.

paigoomein: not really, i didnt want to waste his or mine time. i told him ill get it only if he drops the price. i also told him im going to check out a car with 25,000 miles for only 19,999$. i said only reason im not considering that car is the interior is beige, but if worst comes to worst, color shouldnt matter and ill get that one.

i scared him with this whole "theres ****load of other cars going cheaper" thing

exclusiveonez: he told me that, i knew it. i would ask him questions about the technology and engineering of the car, and he kept refering to the paper and would tell me ..."its rear wheel drive, got VDC, foglights..." lol

Money is money, either way it goes into the bank account and shows up the same.As far as losing bargaining power, why? Either they want to get rid of the car or not. He's already expressed his requirements to buy the car or he wont buy it.I guess maybe this car has gotten alot more interest in the last year. I got mine at the end of last January or February and these were sitting on the lot for long periods of time just off lease. I see them everywhere around me now at the dealerships.Cheers

ok, now they are trying to play games and sucking my ****

last word with manager out the dealer that day was "no, i cant do 21,000, thats how much i paid for it, best i can do is give you employee discount which is about 500 off (22,500)."

one of the lady called back today, (supposedly shes a reception there only/ but now she knows my name and the whole deal), she tried to get a follow up on me and i told her, i might go for it if they will do 21,000 out the door. she then says, "well the manager tried to get 21,500 at least but we can do 21,200 for you"

i told her there were many rock chips on the front bumper and grill damage. she said she will check it.

i told her, i really dont to pay that much for a car in that condition. and that there was another car im going to look at in woodland hills.

oddly, she then says something like "why would you go that far to see a car, look they are giving a great deal on a car with such mileage, but im just trying to help you get a good deal, im not involved in the sale, im just the receptionist. i get paid whether or not you buy the car..."

weird

at this point, im really trying to push the cosmetic flaws on the car.

Just walk away at this point. If you take anymore of their calls you are playing their games. Just keep on the lookout, you WILL find one in your price range.Cheers

the biggest thing to practice is to know when to walk away

same thing happened to me when i picked up my 03...

i walked in there with a price in my head set in stone. below 18k OUT THE DOOR.

they had couple of M45s....but kinda beat up for the mileage and doesnt have the option i wanted (heated/cooled seats)

then he showed me a black on black with NAVI and tech package for 3k more.. i was sold and bought it.

until now, i havent seen one around with same/less miles than mine that has navi. this cars are rare with navi.

does that car have navi and all the toys?

seriously, navi is such a rare option for this car. i think i might just wait for a car with navi stock to come along. one of the members here is checking the prices for all the parts required to install a stock navi tommorow.

Stock Navi system installed is going to run you almost 5 grand to install w/ all the right parts. The unit alone is $4500 from the dealer.
