I intend to get a lightened flywheel/clutch/PP combo when I get my SR up on a motormount before I drop it in my car. I was reading something about there being negative side effects to having a lightened flywheel. Is this true? If so, what are the side effects? Boost? Idle?

TIA.

well it all depends on how much you decide to lighten it. I am not sure of all the effects of it, but i know that by making your flywheel lighter you are cutting down on some of the rotational mass that your motor has, which is what increases its acceleration, but on that same note, your acceleration will actually be hindered when if for some reason you attempted the same run up a grade (hill). I suppose if you are having this be a drag or auto cross only car it would be ok to take quite a bit off. but i'd imagine that it would slow your speed when you hit a hill (Cajon Pass).

A lot of drag racers don't really use them to much, you're making enough power that an extremely lightened flywheel isn't that important. The other thing to get used to is that sure, you accelerate faster because of less rotational mass, but your engine also decelerates faster, ( the RPMs that its spinning at, do to less mass, if I didn't have a terrible migraine I could remember the physics, wheres K when I need him ) suffice to say you can drop right out of a power band or stall your car out in lower gears before you're used to it. : )

Hmmmm. Thanks for the input guys. In your opinion, would you guys use lightened flywheels on your SR's? Yes, I do have to go over the Cajon Pass a lot; I'm trying to avoid having this as my daily driver, but it may come to that at some point, at least for a short while.

Also, anyone know the weight of the stock flywheel? So that I can find out what the difference is with the aftermarked flywheel.

TIA.

i think the stock unit is about 8.6 kg or about 19lbs math may be a little off.

you may have to resurface the flywheel anyways, you'll know when you pull the transmission off to replace the clutch (as i'm sure you'd want to do when you get your clip)

I've seened lightened flywheels from 15 to 11 to 8 lbs (jun). I think a 15 would be ok for street applications, but I don't know about the 11 or 8, I would probably only use them on race cars only.
