IM starting to wonder if i need an oil restrictor with the turbo im running. I was initially told that i didnt, BUT, after a freshly rebuilt turbo was thrown on there today, the first initial drive and absolutely RAPING of the car, there was 0 smoke, and now ive driven it a bit more, ive got just as much as before... it just billows out... im wondering if its blowing oil past the seals in the turbo.

Its an RB25DET T3 Ballbearing turbo, im only running roughly 6psi with no spike or anything. Im running a stainless braided line from factory location up to turbo and then draining back to factory location.

any ideas please lmk asap!

phil

ugh... dont read too much into "breakin" period on a turbo... ive INSTANTLY gone out and beat the holy **** out of TONS of them and never had a problem... same thing with an engine... BREAK IT IN HOW YOUR GONNA DRIVE IT!

ive got 112 miles exactly on my motor, and ive done at least 20 8500rpm pulls....

im putting a restrictor on, buddy of mine put his on mine and seemed to fix the problem

Unlplug that pcv valve and send it to the intake cam cover.

You said you tried it before, but try it again with this new turbo.

agreed on the break in sentiments, babying a motor during the first hours of its life isnt a good thing either....piston rings passivley scraping in their bores doesnt do much for seating them, they need combustion pressure / load pusing them out agains the cylinder walls.

keep us updated

hardly smoked all day... thinking it may be a combo of the fact that my BOV took a **** already and that i dont have an oil restrictor... both will be fixed tonight, IF the rain stops...

It doesn't have a restrictor from Nissan, why would you think it needs one now?

because its obviously blowing oil past the seals in the turbo. ITs a fresh turbo, fresh motor with perfect compression, and ive got all proper hose routing from valvecovers done...

Nissan didn't put a restrictor from the factory and these turbos live a long time without blowing oil, yours did not. What's the variable in that equasion? Sounds like a bad overhaul to me.I'm suprised someone would even try rebuilding an RB25 turbo. My buddy sent his in to Turbonetics and they said "we don't mess turbo's with plastic compressor wheels". We thought they were BSing but they actually mailed the wheel back to us, no **** plastic wheel. You must have the variant that actually had a metal wheel. You should see the goofy little "bearings" holding the compressor end together, wow!

i had a metal wheel installed and ported the compressor housing... they tested it at their shop and it flows 32+lbs. I know the GT28RS flows 35 and the GT28R flows 31 so i should be able to make roughly 290whp on this thing.

we fixed the bov like i mentioned above and i took it for a FLOGGED OUT full on drive, making boost every chance i could get... in the pooring rain, and no smoke, so maybe the bov was actually causing the problem somehow... or maybe whatever excess oil from the old blown turbo was still in there was just burning off... who knows... it still may smoke again, but i hope not

S13... nickle and dime you to ****ign DEATH! I SWEAR!

Very possible. I have taken off more then a few intercooler pipes and have 1/4 of a quart of oil dump out of the core.

ive had the charge pipe off the turbo, oFF a couple times recently tho and no oil residue, the last turbo smoked just as bad, and i have a 100% fresh turbo on there... I checked today and my compression is fine, 175 across all 4, ive tried with and without the pcv hooked up...

it looks like its gonna come down to if the restrictor works or not... if not then im totally lost...

liek is aid, i can start it up in the morning, or after letting it sit for a couple hours and it wont smoke at all... then i can drive it up the street and back and it smokes... the only time it smokes is at idle, never under power while driving...

if the guides were worn out, oil would seep down into the cyls... my plugs are dry, it doesnt seem to be burning oil in the combusion chamber.

Ballbearing turbo's need about half the oil supply than the conventional bush bearing.

So yea, id be putting an oil restrictor on the oil feed line.

No restrictor from Nissan on this turbo and they don't fail with any greater frequency than the bushe RB20 units. My S14 turbo also spun for damned near 7 years restrictorless with no symptoms like we are seeing here.

Mine does the same thing......I can drive it hard all day, with no smoke.....but if I come to a stop after cruising on the freeway or something, and let it idle smoke will bellow out the exhaust after 5 mins or so of idling. Only does it like that. When I cold crank it and let it idle, it can sit there and idle all day long, and no smoke. I'm blaming the oil seals in the turbo.....it's a t25g, and I first had it on my ca18et, and I got these symptoms as soon as I put it on there....and now, same symptoms with it on my ca-det

Anyone who sits in a lot of traffic, that has to sit through 2-3 red light cycles before they make it through the intersection

I can't just sit there. I have to obnoxiously rev my engine. God, I must be so annoying in traffic.

Just think........ the more you rev the less you have to hear about how obnoxiuos you are

That is a bad thing.

My car doesn't have a horn, so I have to rev obnoxiously at people instead. Sometimes I wish I had a horn....or my car was louder.

I don't think a restrictor will help but it's worth a try before going to the trouble of pulling the turbo. Give it a shot, see what happens.
