Good Day People...

First off thankz for all the great advice you guys give on the CA18DET, The search button helps me out loads. But Ive seached and I havent found the correct answer.

Im getting a very sweet deal on a GTI-R T28 BB turbo, with a .86 A/r, I know the turbo needs to be clocked and a Bracket needs to made for the waste-gate, But I need to ask two questions

1. Is the .86 A/R to big for my small CA? What RPM will the turbo be spooled?

2. Are there anymore mods needed to fit this turbo to my CA?

Mods:

76 mm / 3 inch Turbo back - no CAT one boxPorted Exhaust / Ported Intake manifold4 Port Head

Thankz for the Help....

yes the .86 is way to large for the CA i would stick around the .63 or smaller. it would work it just would be around christmas time before you started to spool...

it will still work i am not saying that you are just going to be watching paint dry during spoolup. you don't have to replace the turbo at all. you can purchase a smaller exhaust housing. or have the one you have modified with some extra material but i would only have a shop do this if they have an awesome reputation with turbo's... not no fly by night.

Thanks...

thats about the range I was thinking, Im ok with that becuase Its going to be a Good power gain over the stock turbo.

Im also hoping my mods bring that level down to around 3500 RPM, I have a 76 mm/ 3inch from the turbo with a straght through box at the end, And a Ported exhaust housing ,Here in SA no-one cares about Smog or noise, The stock turbo is full spooled currently at 2800 RPM at 10psi.She runs out of "puff" at around 6100 RPM

beans33 - How was fitment of the turbo? I currently have braided lines , And I know it needs to be clocked , but are then any other issues?

BACARDI_DWB - Thanks for the help, didnt mean to sound rude, We dont have any good turbo people here ,and the people that are good are way to expencive.

The turbo will work, but requires a bit of work to get it to fit properly. I REALLY think you are going to be dissapointed in the performance of the turbo. I mean, if you're ok w/not spooling up until 4K RPM, why don't get get a T3/T4, have the same spool time, and make WAAY more power than what you'll make with that T28.

For a street car I'd say .64 is the max and still have it be fun. .48 is ideal.

Hey Torpor,

The gang is right about your turbo. Remember, that turbo is a factory chosen option for the higher-end/higher-output SR20DET which puts out more aggressive exhaust pulses the CA will ever produce. Like float said, if you had an exhaust housing of .48 (stock CA18DET) or .64 (stock SR20DET), you will be much more happier with your little CA. With a .86, you will be somewhat disappointed. The .48 is the bomb for this motor and the .64 gives you a few more ponies on the top side. Take their advice, I couldn't have answered it no better.

Another thing to note, the GTiR T28 is not ball-bearing. Its a standard journal bearing turbo.

Damn, thanks people.

I'm really stuck between a rock and a hard place now.I'm getting the turbo for $382 (fully reckoned with a 360 degree thrust bearing).

T3/T4 turbo's go for $972 here. And a GT28rs is $1265 here.I can’t afford any of those, Also only the 180sx was sold here and limited numbers of S14 (black-top SR20DET). There aren’t even S14 in scrap yards here.

And any mods to turbo will cost more then the turbo itself. Please I need your help i am not going to hold anyone responsible but should I keep the old turbo or try this Gti-r unit? I cant get a deal like this again and I cant even get a t28 or t25 off a SR20 Please: bowdown

I got my ball-bearing S15 T28 for $650 + shipping. And from a bit of personal experience I've had over the years, out of the 4-5 used turbos I've bought on various cars, none of them lasted more than 3-4 months before dying on me. The peace of mind you have when buying a new turbo is well worth it to me now.

it was just a hair over $400 shipper for a brand new turbo. The turbo swap will be just like using a stock ca18det turbo replacement so its straight forward, no clocking, no b/s oil lines to bend. its stock except its good to 300whp. Ill post up some reviews when I get my ssac mani and chip, then Ill let you know how it goes.

I agree with him, yes that turbo is an upgrade, but sometimes bigger isnt always better. Make the smart upgrade, not just anyone to call it that.

If Dee can get you that hybrid t25, thats my vote definitely.

Thank all of you...

Remember Im in South African .... we have to pay large import duties on any thing we import , not including the cost of the item and shipping it here. I was reading up on Dee 's cool turbo sounds great maybe some day when I have that kind of money to import.

Drag racing is what im going to be using the car for mainly, Im going to take the turbo then sell it on to an SR owner here if it doesnt work out.

Is there anyway to decrease to spool?

Thanks Again for all the help
