If I wanted to upgrade the ignition system on my S14, what would I need to start with and would I see an improvement in gas mileage?I need some new spark plug wires and was wondering if I upgrade the ignition, would the stock 7mm wires hold? Thanks for any info you guys have.

The stock ignition should be fine for a stock motor. My suggestion: New OEM cap and rotor, NGK plugs and wireset. If you're going whole hog you could put in a new coil as well. But as far as I know, those almost never go bad. Messing with your ignition system shouldn't be necessary unless you're running boost or some really out-there air/fuel ratios.

There's other stuff you can do. Air filter, tire pressure, injector cleaning, O2 sensor; but all that stuff's been covered to death, I think. If not I can do a short write-up, I suppose.

Also, anyone run into any (other) particular mileage demons? Random stuff that kills MPG? I used to get 25/29, but now I'm closer to 21/26. S'pose it could be the 17s...

Not wanting to add to the debate about octaine but you may wnat to experiment with the gas availible in your area.

It may cost more for higher octaine gas but if you get better millage it may be cheaper per mile.

Take the lead out of your foot along with everything else suggested should help milage.

BTW: Some people think Synthetic Oil will improve mileage. Don't know myself.

oh yeah, you will get more miles per gallon on gas that doesnt have ethanol in it.

ethanol has less energy per unit that gasoline.

what about those "Tornados" that go in your intake? Do they work? I just bought one.

Also i got a cheap resister that is supposed to help mpg.

Keep up with the maintenance, drive like an old lady, and I have only heard of 1 person with legitimate peformance out of a Tornado. That was on an older Cavalier mind you.

I know that all the basic bolt ons ( full exhaust, pulleys, intake, msd ignition etc) help improve gas mileage. from what i read somewhere using full synthetic helps improve mileage. using higher octane helps get better gas milage but i dont think its worth the money. also get small rims, like 16" with small profile

i had those on my s14 and i got rougly 350 miles on a full tank

just my input

some of the things I have done to my car was"hot wire" the fule pump as well as the stock coil. stanza (altima fans work 2) E-fand. Royal purple in the motor after I SEAfoamed it. took appart the IAV and cleaned it with a wire brush and brake clean.

I noticed a big difference after I used the royal purple. motor got quieter. ran smother, better MPG's

I get better mpg with higher octane fuel. It just drives me crazy when people say,"Oh I can't afford premium," or ,"its not worth the money." Just think; if you put say 20 gallons of premium in your tank it ends up costing you a whopping total of $4.00 more than the cheap stuff would have. And thats probobly an extra 40 miles for that tank. If it gets you better mileage, how is it NOT worth it? Also after I changed my fuel filter a saw a nice spike in mpg.

^ Are you serious? A Z and a vert and you're complaining about premium. Don't you have to put premium in a Z anyways???

no...

simple way of conserving gas are

pump in the morning wen temps are cooler, gas expands with heat, so even if it reads 10 gallons thru the pump, it might be a bit less...with gas prices these day u want what u payed for,

dont pump when there refilling tanks, sediment rises and itll get in ur tank...nuff said

dont get all fast and furious...why be stupid?

run A/C minimal, if at all...just remove the belt in seasons u dont need it...less drag

remove clutch and replace with electric fan...less drag better mileage

dont be a led foot in street and floor it...the constant high and low speeds kills mpg

stay at a pace in the freeway...stayin at 60-65 constant actually saves gas instaed of constantly flooring it to get acar ahead..

proper oil changes

for lower mile engines or rebuilt engine...seafoam isnt a bad idea
