Hi!

I am doing all the research I can before I buy a 240sx and do an SR install. I am only after like 230whp like the guy in the other current thread. I plan on running a FMIC becuase I believe heat is evil. My question is: won't the stock SR20DET BOV work? I am older (almost 40y.o.) want this to be a sleeper and don't want anything flashy with a loud BOV.

So, can I stick with stock, or do I need an aftermarket BOV for only 10 psi?

I'm pretty sure there's no problem with 10psi on the stock bov, but we'll see what others say. 40 years old and into SR's?!!?!? awsome for sure

(bump)So, what's the deal-nobody's tried a stock BOV with 10 psi?

Personally - I dont see a single problem with it. It works on pressure differential, not just boost. 10psi is only what 2-3 psi above stock? Don't sweat it.

Ok. I just saw the other thread with the 19 year old kid on a budget trying to build only to 230hp, everyone was listing a BOV on the list of parts he will need to buy. I am trying to build basically the same thing.

Glad to hear that's $100 we don't need to spend!

The stocker will leak boost a lot more than an aftermarket, but that won't be a problem as long as it is in good condition and properly re-circulated.

I scored a blitz ss bov for $50 of ebay with everything there reddy to put inline on the hot pipe! Its stelth sounding @10-14psi! Good thing I already had an safc2! The stock bov/sidemount ic was ment for 10-11 psi! I dont even look at my black fmic, its so Stelth! At 10 psi I dont think It would be a good Idea to run a ka fuel pump.

Stock Boost without the Restrictor in the stock solenoid vacuum line is 10 psi IIRC. Irregardless 10psi is just fine. The turbo and injectors will run out of steam before the BOV.

The factory bypass valve does have a tendency to leak at higher boost levels, but 10psi shouldn't be a problem at all. On cold nights I boost creep to 10psi and haven't had any problems with the stock unit so far.

If you want your car to be a sleeper stick with the stock SMIC at 10psi. I noticed quite a difference in response when switching over to the FMIC. This is more then likely attributed to the poor internal design of the intercooler I'm running causing slight back pressure in the intake tract. At 10psi the SMIC should be sufficient for short runs.

So, removing the restrictor in the solenoid brings me to 10psi? Sweet!

Not sure I will even do that, though. I just test drove my first SR20DET, completely stock, and I would be totally happy with the stock 7psi!!!

(I'm in love!)

Awesome and congrats!

If whoever did your swap used the stock boost solenoid then you will be able to do this, most people however do not receive the solenoid with their swap or just ditch it in favor of an aftermarket controller. JHOT actually sent me the boost solenoid and I am actually using it. But anway, here's a link to instructions on the free mod.

Ha! You enjoy 7psi for now, but wait until the boost bug bites. You'll want more.

(heh) That's what everybody tells me!

I will stay stock for now, and if I want to experiment I will do the restrictor mod to see what it feels like. If I like it, I will do the FMIC and get a boost gauge to keep things in line. Thanks for the tip!!!

if the stock ones fails, use a dsm bov iirc it holds more boost and is quiet. if not get an aftermarket bov and recirc it, it wont make much noise then. good luck

Oh, yeah. I knew that...

So, how do I know if my stock BOV is leaking boost? I need a boost gauge, right?

hey - from what I've understood as long as you can find the way to rig the recirculating BOV with the FMIC, you'll be fine - keep me posted on your build

And I'll do the same with mine (BTW this is the 19 year old lol)
