Need to remove intake manifold for Timing Chain install DOHC?

I've begun the timing chain kit install on my 92 240, but it appears that there is something I need to disconnect, thats attached to the lower cover, but I can't get to it because its under the intake manifold. Its under the thermostat housing, attached to the back of the cover and maybe the block? THere is also a hose attached to the back of the thermostat housing.

Is it possible to do the timing chains/guides/tensioners without removing the manifold?
