Hey guys as you can see ive registered just to get an opinion on this. Im currently looking to buy this car but i have looked around and im having second thoughts of it . Story is a friend of mine traded his s15 for this s14 with an rb26, problem is it was built by top hat performance in georgia , at least thats what i put together , and looking around top hat is a bit on the negative side for most people so im second guessing it , here are the links let me know what you think ...

so you're wondering if you should buy this car because it was built by a shop that has a bad reputation.......

I cant see why that would affect your decision. can you see it in person, and drive it?

Ive seen it in person , seen it turned on , i think im better off just taking it to a local shop and ask them to check it , i was just worried because people weren't to happy with some of his work < not saying anything about them because i don't personally know them but its what ive read online

ok i dont know much about your car but i can give u some of my experience with top hat.

1...i traded a him a sr transmission for a s14 ka transmission and a new clutch and i got home and put it in and the bearings were bad...response from him was sorry dude, it was a good transmission when i had it...this was with mike(owner)

2....my friend had his sr built by them and it turned out to be a good running motor until.....5k miles later, it started making alot of vibration noises and then one day, it just went pow...out of knowhere.

the problem was after breaking the motor down....the mechanic put the main caps..12543..instead of 12345...and this aused the crank to eventually wear down the collar itself and the journal that is machined into the block....and also the collar slung around in the bottom in and scarred the one of the cylinder walls a s*** ton and then finally slinging itself down to the oil pan....

price he paid...like 1000 in labor and a junk block and crank 5k miles later.

Def sounds like a bad vibe to me... you could take the rb home and rebuild it yourself with confidence... especially before you start driving it and problems arise.

I wish I could say this to everyone... all the time, but I cant, so right now its appropriate.

He got screwed from the begging because the s15 was imported and didnt have papers legally (don't know how that works) so they swapped the vins to a 94 240sx and he didn't know any better and took the bate , he couldn't sell it because no one would take it , so this guy ended up coming down from Georgia and trading it . So now he got another lemon sort of speak , but who knows maybe the car is good im just not willing to gamble the money to find out .....

Yep , im almost convinced ima build a s13 or a kouki with Carisma in Orlando Fl , its a husband and wife owned shop and they are really nice and legit people , ive seen there work in a couple of cars and its to the T , now all i got to do is find a good chases to build it on . oh i plan on going rb25 btw.... check em out at carismallc.com ............ Budget for this is 10-15k , depending on the work i gotta do on the chassis to clean it up ..

you dont like building cars out of your garage? thats what I mean by build it yourself... not take it to another shop! lol

I can understand, not everyone is into that. but the thousands you spent on labor, can go towards wheels or coilovres.

but good luck tho.... don't spend too much!!!

you could twin turbo a GM truck motor, have more torque, easier access to parts, and spend less. ...just something to think about. (thats what im doing)
