Sorry to bother everyone I'm new to the SR community. I have been looking for DIY on changing my headgasket. I have a redtop in a s13 hatch. I found the head removal post in the tech page which is great. My issues are that I'm chaning the headgasket with the motor in the car. I'm not that experienced with cars but I also dont have the money to pay for labor so I'm trying to do my own work. Plus I really enjoy learning along the way. The issue I'm running into currently is the intake manifold. I've searched and all I pull up are KA intake manifold removal ?s. I'm trying to find out if I have to remove the upper and lower intake as one or can I remove just the upper manifold. I was hoping to find a write up on what all I need to remove for the headgasket swap. Since the writeup on the tech page is with the motor out with the manifold already off and free of everything I'm kind of lost. Any help would be great. Thanks.

FSM is your best friend. I always take the intake off in 1 peace. I remove the 2 braces, un-bolt it from the head, pull it away from the head and remove the vac and coolant hose's. Then it comes off. remove the turbo mani, valve cover, timing chain tension-er, CAS, cam's, head bolts and then the head comes off. If you remove the lifter's, rocker's, valve shim's and retainers, put them in the same order they came out. Again, you should download a fsm.

Thanks alot I appreciate the help. I pulled the head yesterday and a friends is helping me lap the valves and refresh the head. I just purchased a new intake manifold and exhaust manifold so I'm debating picking up a t28 and some other toys. Thanks again.

Make sure to have the head checked and resurfaced before putting it all back in. At least that's what I'd suggest since you already have the head off and you're putting on a new head gasket.

Also you should consider replacing the head bolts as used ones tend to have some stretch in them, you won't that when reinstalling a head. You don't have to do it, but its one of those since you are already doing the work then you might as well.
