well, interesting day today. My J30's alternator belt seems to have slipped off. I investigated it further and discovered the belt had not snapped, but is frayed and in bad condition. I need a new one, and i plan on DIYing the install. All i need now is to buy the belt. I was wondering if the great Joe could help me aquire one.

I'd check the associated pulley as well. Could be that it's rough and seized causing the belt damage. In any case, give Joe a call at 1-888-216-5328.

Wonder how much "easier" it will be to replace when it fails before OEM?__________________Brian1995 Q45 & Q45t & 2000 Q45

Well, time is of great importance. currently, my car is parked in my girlfriend's parents garage. So i went ahead and bought the belt from schucks for 10 bucks. In any case, id rather have quality from Joe, but my first priority is getting my car to my garage. Then i can worry about extra stuff.

I'll keep posted on my progress. Could be a little more than just a bad belt, i have nothing to back this theory up other than i don't want to jinx anything.

this should be the last belt i need replaced for a long while. I just recently replaced the timing belt along with many others. However, this is a great oppurtunity to check everything under the hood. Belts, hoses, etc. hopefully i can find anything that may cause me problems later. And order from joe now.

Thanks for the help everyone :)!

Joe has over-nighted stuff to me - via Airborne Express. At a reasonable shipping cost too!

well returned from visiting my car at my girlfriend's garage. And there's a few more problems then we realized.

1. Getting the new belt on requires taking the fan off, and removing the AC belt. 2. When putting the old belt back on(it never actually snapped, only slipped off) it Immediately slips off again. This means something pushing the belt off every time.

Anyone know what's causing this? Bad alternator? my water pump is brand new(2 months old), so i don't think it has anything to do with that. I know it's very vauge information. But does anyone know what the problem could be, or how much it will cost to fix? any help is greatly appreciated, im starting to feel that panic like something serious is wrong.

you do not need to remove the fan to replace this belt.

I replaced my belts from carquest to nissan

Only probelm I had in doing so was that I had to loosen the ps reservoir from the wheel well in order to move the ps unit enought to get the belt on.

I snaked the belt over the fan, really not a big deal.

Yes you have to remove the other belts but why not replace all at one time. Not that involved really.

Since some things were replaced then look at the belt when assembled and see if the pulleys all line up otherwise the belt could be bad. Father in law had similar situation.

hmm snaking the belt over the fan does seem doable. Im sure the belt is bad, it's tattered and looks messed up on the edges. The problem is the belt falls off immidiately when the car is started, could this just be alignment? If so, taking it to a mechanic would probably be my best bet.

mechanically inclined?

can you out a new belt on yourself?

Do you have ramps so you can get under the car?

The belt is bad an without replacing it with a new belt then you will never know if it is the alignment.

You can take a straight edge and check the alignments of the pullies

IF you do not feel that you can then a mechanic is the only way but I really do not suggest trying to drive the car withou ps. The car is heavy and I had to do this locally when trouble shooting a pulley problem.

It seems that something is wrong with the alignment, my first plan is to get it home somehow. Once in a familiar garage I think we can take another stab at it. We only were able to work on it for less than an hour tonight, and it sure looked like that fan needed to come off. If the fan stays on, and we remove the other belts, then replace everything again, im worried that even if we check the alignment the belt falls right off again. It just seems like soemthing's throwing the belt off the pullies.

did this start after you had the timing belt and water pump replaced?

If so then I would say that soemthing with alignment or such is worng and definately deserves attention

post so we know how it went

the fan really does not need to be removed. The trick is to snake it ovet he fins carefully then ove the far fins.

wow interesting, i JUST had water belt and timing belt replaced a couple months ago. The current problem started after i had to slam my breaks VERY hard on the freeway, then speed up again. Im almost positive this is when the problem occured since i slowly but surely lost power the next day. (lights started dimming, stereo turned off, etc.) at first i thought something was REALLY wrong cause my electrical system was failing, turns out i was running on nothing but battery power. Sure enough when we popped the hood the belt had slipped off, we were able to get the belt back on again but it immidiately came off again. Im guessing when i had my freeway "incident" something got knocked out of line.

Does the pully for that belt (I assume it has one) spin freely? If it's seized it could be throwing the belt. I can't imagine the alternator or water pump getting out of "alignment" unless something fell off, like a retaining bolt! I'd vote for a bad pulley.

apparently on closer inspection the water pump wiggled a little bit, could this be related?

Definitely could be. If it's loose enough to wiggle by hand, imagine how it deflects when loaded by the belt. What secures the water pump to the engine? A bunch of bolts and some RTV sealant? If so, the bolts are too loose. They should be compressing the pump to the block, creating enough friction that it can't possibly slide. The RTV seals it from leaking.

On second thought, did I misunderstand you? Is the entire pump wiggling, or just the shaft/pulley? That sounds more likely to me...that the pump bearing failed.
