I have a 98 240sx and my front tires are bald. I have two options, rotating the "decent" back tires to the front and getting nitto drag radials, or replacing all four with some kind of aggressive tire for rain + dry. This is my daily driver so I need a tire that will be ok in rain, decent in snow, and good on dry. My car does not have VLSD, and I think with nitto drag radials I will not need it. The open diff is fine until a wheel starts slipping and with nitto drag radials I don't think there will be any slippage. At the same time, if I replace the back with nitto drags, the fronts will have to be replaced in maybe 5,000 to 10,000 miles. I don't want to spend alot, and at the same time I love pealing out. With my decent condition continental touring tires I can peal out whenever I want, (stock car too) but I'll have to stop that once I get new tires. So I don't want to spend and incedible amount for tires, have a tire that will be good all around, with good grip on dry to drag race, and stick enough so my back end doesn't come out in turns. (I'm worried nitto drag radials will be horrible in turns because they are made to go straight) I'm a preaty inexperienced driver and the last thing I want is my back breaking lose, which is also why the new tires are going on the back. If you have a tire you recommend and will fit stock 98 SE alloy rims, let me know. Thanks

OK, here's a quick lesson.-There's absolutely NO REASON WHAT SO EVER that you would need drag radials on a daily driver.-ALWAYS replace all 4 tires with the same brand/style of tire at the SAME time.-Just go with the all season option you suggested-Search

Why is it so important to replace all 4 tires with the same brand at the same time? left or right tires being the same i understand...but why the front and back?

I'd have to disagree with putting drag radials on a DD. I've done so for the last 3 years. Granted, I'm not doing any severe cornering in the rain, but my Skyline doesn't like the rain with any tires.

Nitto 555r's are an excellent tire, but if you don't actually race your DD then I wouldn't use them or any drag radial for that matter.

If you want to "peal" out all the time and don't want to spend alot of cash. Just find any decent tire thats onsale.

Kumho Ecsta Supra 712's i think they are performance wet/dry only. but i have heard nothing but the best about them, for multi-use tires. they wear hard, have excellent grip, etc. i am getting them as soon as i get a set of 16" rimsand i'll be keeping my dunlop sp5k's for the winter

The only way I would say go with the nitto's in the back would be if you had a strong enough engine and had LSD to back them up, on a stock car on the street I see no point...but I'm sure they will provoke some races if you want.

LOL!!!!!!! ... Ecsta Supras have great grip ... this tells me one of several things:

1. You run 15+ sec. times at the track2. You have stockish suspension3. You dont drive hard enough4. You havent used anything else nor have your friends

Alot of my friends made the mistake of using Kumhos... they are crap.

My friend's Subaru 2.5RS nearly got toasted when a tire blew out totally on it own. This is on a cold day, no performance driving.

My friends 240 gets absolutely no traction in 1st or most of 2nd with his SR. Stock turbo, runs high 13s.

Upon a run at the local twisty road from hell the tires fatigued incredibly fast to the point they became questionable.

Also at this trip the tires sucked horribly at grip driving so we had to resort to driving sideways... in an AWD car setup for grip.

I suppose the things i've heard about Kumho's were all wrong NismoFreak:

http://www.tirerack.com/survey...Y.jsp

there are a lot of factors that can be considered into why a tire woud fail catastrophically (for it happens rarely) and i don't believe they are designed for drag racing. this is a wet/dry performance tire.

i'm not exactly sure what kind of Yokohama's my ex has on his 5th gen 'Lude, but i've watched him cut down his autocross times when he replaced his p.o.s. bridgestone's with them-- they are also all-season performance. and do decent in the snow (so he tells me) , very pricey though. they stick even better now with the use of a sway bar. time will tell in how long they last.

i am swayed towards the kumho's because they are reasonable, wear hard, and will probably make a good autocrossing tire. if don't get these i'll probably get the yokohama's that i've mentioned above or i will go with a different kind of dunlop.

I didnt mean to be so blunt but I honestly think the tires arent that great. For the price yeah you cant beat them but why skimp on tires. They are the final arguement in any performance aspect. Handling, Braking, Acceleration.

My Tires!! Oh and I love them oh so much! Oh and by the way Ecsta Supras ARE crap. I work at discount tire and have had numerouse people complain about them....on another note my friend's MR2 had them when he totoled it he went around a corner at 80, did a 360,flipped it and it was totaled. I took the turn at somewhere in between 80-85 with minimal oversteer and made it! They just dont have a good tread pattern, if you look at it there are too many ridges and too many sections, the bigger the outer studs of rubber, the more traction you will have around the corners. As far as drag goes, you want a tires with as little ridges as possible. For example: Gforce KDW's, i used these as my drag tires at the KY meet and hooked up amazingly with an open diff!

what a bad car to talk about tires on. MR2's are notorius for unpredictability. well. anyhow, about the Kumho's-- it's all i've heard/read.

Its a good tire....give them about 500 miles to break in. You have to wear off the top layer of silicone before you even think about driving hard. There are 3 lines on the edges of each tire...when those lines are gone (or are almost gone) the silicone has worn off considering that your tire is cambered and wearing correctly.

I'm currently using Dunlop SP 5000's. Nice all-weather tire, wearing well, (even with trips to the track) grip pretty well, and reasonably priced. Drag tires= accident waiting to happen. Stay away from them.
