Hey 240SX Guys,

I need your advice and I'm posting here, because I know I'll get a honest answer. Here is the dilemna:

My car should be completed in a few more weeks and I need a truck that will be reliable for towing the car to car shows, events, etc.

With that being said, I want something that will be powerful enough to pull it, but won't kill me with terrible gas mileage.

From what I gather and I don't know crap about trucks,

the Ford F150 V8, Dodge Ram 1500 V8, and Chevy Silverado V8 all seem to be the best options for bang for the buck.

This truck is also going to serve as my new daily driver, so I don't want a 8 m.p.g vehicle. I'm looking to buy something this weekend, so a quick reply would be appreciated.

What do you recommend? And WHY?

The only problem with the dodge I can find is the Automatic transmissions. From what I have read, the auto transmission's are crap and are extremely prone to breaking.

I agree for the dollar, Dodge is a major contender.

But, I do worry about quality.

I vote for nissan titan. Test drove one and I was pleased but too poor to afford it at the moment. If you have to stick with the domestics you mentioned in your post I would get a chevy, my friend has one and it runs strong.

Nissan titan... hands down!!! rated number one by car and driver if that matters... Prices are cheaper than the competition, very nice interior, powerful motor. Second choice would be the new f150, very good styling inside and out, and good power output. third would be dodge. My friends dad had dodge hemi and it is impressive. And finally the chevy, which I would just not go with... good power, but the exterior and especially interior are lacking...

i'd say the titan, just cuz it'd be cool to roll up in a Nissan, towing a Nissan...and actually doign it as opposed to a frontier *snicker* towing anything :pface

Where you looking for new or used?

If you want good gas mileage, stick with a 5.0. Avoid the 5.6's and up. Hell, try a supercharged 6cyl or something.

Underground - If you are going to be pulling 1 car with a small trailer then the average hardbody/xterra/frontier should suffice. Anything larger, such as a race trailer or bigger would require a littl more meat. The Titan has the meat, but it is not cheap. A base model dodge truck should do the trick and keep the price down. Get the towing package tho, it has better springs and such.....

OH! and Hemis have dual plugs per cylinder that need replacing every 30k unlike the 100k platinum titan ones! Thats what the guy told me when I test drove one:D(titan, that is.)

Dodge is rated at more HP but titan is faster, too. BTW

I just wrote a long friggin post and then was deleting a typo and the browser went back and I lost all my post. Oh well I guess I will start over. I was looking for trucks for my uncle recently because he has a baby and wants to get a crew cab. So I test drove and read a lot about trucks and have to say that I was the most impresed with the Titan but it did not come with a crew cab and a full size bed so it was out. The next was the Dodge fallowed closly by the Chevy, and then the Ford trailed way behind and did not look to be the same caliper as the others. The reason I suggest the Dogde was because it offered better a combination of options and packages. I thought the Chevy was probably a little better built than the Dodge but was limited in terms of options. Now on to the gas milage, Carpoint has a gas milage of 14/17 for the base motor and 13/17 for the Hemi. Everything I have read says buy the Hemi because it is a much better built motor and has the better transmission. Also if you plan on hauling never buy a manual transmission there is a reason you dont see any work trucks coming with them. Just so I dont hear anything about it, semi's do have manuals but those have like 18 speeds not 6 and the new ones are starting to get autos but are still expensive. (Friend worked as a dispatch for a summer job) So I will wrap up telling you that for the most part it is a toss up between the Titan, Dodge and Chevy. The differance is finding the options that will make you happy. If you can get options you want on any one of them then the Titan has some really nice features that the other cars dont come with (the rear door folds all the way flush to the truck just as an example of the good ideas). Then the Chevy is probably built better than the dodge but the dodge comes with more power for the same money and how better options packages. Good luck finding a truck you are happy with.John

Oh yeah forgot to mention this, all the trucks offer towing packages and like Camel said if you are going to be pulling get the tow package they change the suspension to be better for towing.

Ok, my opinion on it is this: Best to worst

F-250/350 Diesel up to 2001Nissan TitanFord F-150 not 03-04Chevy SilveradoDodge Ram 1500

Problem with the top two is price. I have been in all but the dodge and the titan for towing trailers and such, the powerstroke diesel pulls the best out of chevy/ford/dodge diesels, and you can find 98-99 F-250's relatively cheap nowadays. Diesel fuel is cheaper in most regions anyways, and pulling trailers hardly affects the powerstrokes, about 18-20 MPG. The F-150's are pretty good also. The chevys are also a good deal. I agree with someone else who posted above, the Dodges are known to have automatic transmission problems when you tow trailers often...torque convertors send metal shavings into your transmission : \ Seen it happen twice, got stranded 15 miles out of town once. Thanks to a cell phone, i didnt have to walk : |

Get a Ford Powerstroke diesel, great towing trucks, and very reliable. My father has one, has 105k miles without an oil change...But he's running the amsoil dual bypass filter w/ full synthetic 5w30. Sends his oil in every 3k miles to have it tested and it has never come back anything but above standard. This is the 7.3 litre one btw.

All of my friends tow their race trailers with the Dodge Hemis, Except one he chose the new F150, I don't know why. I'll have to ask him. But as far as fuel consumption goes, someone already thoughtfully pointed out the Ford Powerstroke is your best bet.
