Go to smogcheck.ca.gov
That is the official website for the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR). In their list of "Our Top Clicks", third from the bottom is a link to "Vehicle Smog Check History". Type in the VIN or license plate, and you'll get the most up to date information for that car.
As far as a gross polluter goes, I'd be cautious. It's possible the cat was the problem, but with gross polluters the problem is usually more serious. Alot of people just throw a cat on hoping it will get them through the smog check, when all it really does is mask the root problem. The poor running engine will destroy the cat again very shortly.
I'd want to see detailed info on the diagnosis and repair, which for smog, by law, has to be documented (and the shop has to keep the paperwork for three years).
