I might purchase this 1989 toyota supra turbo. The car currently resides in california right now. The owner said this lady had the car she passed away and that is how he got the car. I had the vin run by a nico member here and at a california inspection station it recieved:

01/14/2003 88,963 CaliforniaInspection Station Designated GROSS POLLUTERFailed emissions inspection

The car currently has 89, 900 and the reason it was sitting was because the lady passed away and he got it from her son, so it wasn't driven for a while. He said two weeks ago that he got it smogged and that he has the paper work for it. But, the last entry which i copy and pasted above was the last known entry. So i don't know if the guy is lying about having paper work for it being smogged or what and i don't know how big of deal it is to be a gross polluter. He said he got it smogged two weeks ago and that it was a bad catalytic converter, but it does not say it passed emissions. The last known entry is the one above. NEED HELP FROM SOMEONE FROM CALI.

Depends on when you get the carfax, I believe it takes a few weeks for smog/accident entries to actually show up in the DMV system for carfax to find.

Have a look at all his paperwork, or perhaps pay a visit to the DMV to make sure.

Thats the problem, im gonna have my aunt pick it up. I can have her validate the smogging paperwork, but i would like to see it myself first hand and i won't be able to since im going to have the car shipped home. So, im in a little predicament here.

Man that would be awesome if i could get a nico member to look at it for me. I could pay him some money to do that if at all possible. It would for sure have to be tomorrow. The car is in Sun Valley California.

Go to smogcheck.ca.gov

That is the official website for the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR). In their list of "Our Top Clicks", third from the bottom is a link to "Vehicle Smog Check History". Type in the VIN or license plate, and you'll get the most up to date information for that car.

As far as a gross polluter goes, I'd be cautious. It's possible the cat was the problem, but with gross polluters the problem is usually more serious. Alot of people just throw a cat on hoping it will get them through the smog check, when all it really does is mask the root problem. The poor running engine will destroy the cat again very shortly.

I'd want to see detailed info on the diagnosis and repair, which for smog, by law, has to be documented (and the shop has to keep the paperwork for three years).

be careful it might be a blown head gasket! That is a common problem with MKIII supra's, and it is not an easy or cheap thing to fix. The car will run, but not for too long, and of course it won't pass smog. good luck, hopefully the guy is telling the truth and you get a steal, but make sure you know what you are buying.
