Last night I was working on the engine trying to take the front cover off to check the guides. In the process of taking the crank pulley off I noticed that there was a slight popping noises when I would push and pull on the pulley. I finally get the pulley off and the front cover off (needs new guides) and I check the noise again.

I can definitely see the whole crank moving back and forward. It only moves about .5 millimeter or so but I can definitely see it and hear it. Is this thing in need of a rebuild or am I just worrying about something that is not broken?

Also... found another quite scary thing. While I was looking over the guides I ran my hand across the oil pump chain and it spun... I was thinking ok, that doesn't seem right. I inspect it come more and find that there is no key in the crank to spin the oil pump sprocket. Now, I not once ever saw the low oil pressure light come on, I didn't hear any valve noise at all, and the engine itself never gave me one bit of trouble. I'm thinking it somehow possibly fell out in the engine removal process or maybe it fell out the very last time I started the engine up. I'm not sure but I'll look it over and see if I can find that key.

I sure as hell hope this thing isn't in need of a rebuild... I don't have the time to really do a rebuild right now. :(

There is no key, the pressure of the 250 lb/ft on the tightened crankshaft pulley,,,,,,,,friction drives the oil chain gear! Why reassembly torque is so critical. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Crankshaft end play max is 0.30 mm or 0.0118" MAX

hmm... no wonder i didn't feel a key way in front of it. just seems kind of odd that they would put a hole for one of those keys in that sprocket. i feel better about that now.

the crank movement still worries me. guess i'll get a tool and see what the end play really is.

many thanks for the help!

^Dennis is right.

I had low oil pressure, but had the dealer retorque the crank pulley bolt and that resolved the problem. The design prevents the oil pump from being damaged should something else seize up, or vice versa -- I dont know actually. I do know the design is that way for a good reason.

jeez, i didn't even think about this. i don't have a torque wrench that goes to 250 ft. lb. guess i'll just get a 1 foot bar and literally hang off it. lol

Surely it took more torque to loosen the bolt that what it will take to tighten it.

well... i got the bolt loose in an attempt to blindly take off the torque converter. i had a 3 or 4 foot "breaker bar" and loosened the crank pulley bolt quite easily.

i guess what i could do is set my torque wrench to 125 ft. lb. and then push it 6 inches away from the head. if i'm correct it should click at 250 ft. lb.

Why would it matter? At 6" you'll be pushing with 250 lbs, but the torque will still only be 125 ft-lbs. The head will still release at 125. You can probably get pretty close to 90lbs * 3ft = 270 ft-lbs by feel.

Breaking torque wrenches break at a specific torque and are ignorant of leverage used to achieve the required force.

The oil pump gear has a key slot so it can slide over the pulley/damper key at the front of the crank.
