What kind of performance driving are you most inclined to? Drag, drift, autocross, etc.....

If your just looking for some extra traction in the rain for around town driving, a used OEM viscous LSD will do you good for less than $400

If you like twisty carvy grip driving stuff (autocross, road courses, hill climbs etc.) and very tolerable street use, a S15 helical LSD is fabulous, however, expect to pay a pretty penny (around $700 with new output shafts and slighy used differential)

If you like beating your car sideways (drifting) but still want to drive on the street, a 2 way clutch-type LSD is the most effective and noisy option. Typically $800-1200 from reputable brands.

If you just want rock bottem prices and you love to drag race or drift, and dont care about street drivability, you could get someone to weld those sun-gears together in the stock open differential for under $150.

There is also 1.5 and 1 way clutch LSD's, OEM modified with phantomgrip, hyper expensive computer controlled electro-magnetic torque split differntials and a few other innovations you either wont care about or cant afford.
