My Dad is not very PC savvy. He's always calling me because something has hijacked his browser or something along those lines.

Is there anything I can have him DL that will basically be a set it and forget it type of security? It doesn't have to be free as long as it works. I'm not worried about hogging resources or anything like that, he just uses the PC for email and banking etc.

It's a Win 7 system.

Thanks

Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D immediately come to mind.

Since those are only anti-spyware he'll need to run some AV program too, plenty of those out there to pick from.

Aww CMON dude...

Don't ya think I would have installed those two already? You're talking to the king of pron over here. There isn't a shady site that I haven't added to my favorites :chuckle:

I need something that is designed for retards. Something that says, "hey Bob, don't f*** install that dude!"...

LOL.

I know, it's a rough request. That's why I asked, cause my usual stuff doesn't keep him from being a full on waterhead when it comes to the PC.

As an example, if he goes to a website for something and see's that shiny flashy, DOWNLOAD NOW AND FIX ALL OF YOUR PROBLEMS button, he's gonna click that fvker.

You probably just need to personally set his browser to a really aggressive setting. I would set the AV to block images, Java, flash, and all of that too. If it's the flashy ads that get him, most likely it's going to be in Java or flash. The ones that are done in HTML will just have to be filtered out by a browser extension, which brings to mind that I would try as hard as I could to eliminate internet explorer from any functions (including browsing) that you can and get another one for him. DOn't forget to make it the default one, also. ;)

Yeah, sorry, it's not really an easy deal, but it's the only one I can think of that's free and the most foolproof.

Removing nasties from other peoples PC's is my specialty. There are several AV programs I can recommend.

AVAST http://www.avast.com/get/000 Free version is what I use, but has constant pop-up nag screens.
AVIRA http://www.avira.com/en/avira-free-antivirus
NOD32 http://www.eset.com/us/home/products/antivirus/ $40 for one PC for one year.

AVG and McAfee are bloated and highly overrated, and harder to remove than some malware!

Yeah, I need to reconfig his stuff and quit treating him like an adult. He's like spastic child...although my 6 yr old probably handles the web better.

Thx Dave

I've hated AVG and McAfee for years.

Guess I need to make a trip and set his pc to infant level.

I have used Kaspersky for a few years but I have done increasingly less work on my home PC lately. I'm not much help otherwise since all my work stuff is in-house.

I use a combination of things, but I recently flipped my antivirus over to Avast! from Microsoft Security Essentials after using it for years. As Noel mentioned, it can be a little annoying with popups but I like it so far. Aside from that I use Malwarebytes and CCleaner.

Paid antivirus like Kapersky and Norton are good but heavily bloated. I prefer the freebies but I've heard eset is pretty good.

Outside of that, I think limiting what he can do would be best. Edit the browser settings and even edit the computer settings to not let him install crap without a password. Treat it like he's a kid.

Also, just go to the add/remove programs dialog and sort by install date. Look for anything recent that looks non-deliberate and remove. The last couple times I had issues with browser hijacking, that was the solution, rather than something more sneaky.

^Exactly what I was thinking. Also add Ad Block Plus it now has the option to select to block malware.

Here is a collection someone made, https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... iapackage/

Disconnect add on is excellent, https://disconnect.me/ http://lifehacker.com/disconnect-2-spee ... -472942968

Also, Kaspersky is probably the best antivirus right now. Eset NOD32 is also good. If his ISP is Comcast then you get Norton for free.
Get the paid version of Malwarebytes.org and that will help block a lot!

The best advice though is to educate the user, I understand it's your dad and could be an impossible task, but you asked ;)

Get it from Micro Center and they will give you the best deal I've seen so far. Kaspersky is really more of an advanced user's AV. It's recovery functions are done in Linux and can cause some problems for those who are not familiar.
